2 Parent Engagement Series Our academic counseling team holds two evening sessions a year focused on the needs of each grade level Topics covered for the first 9 th grade session will include transition to high school, graduation requirements, ways to support you child, college readiness, and much more

3 Plan wisely and develop a 4-year academic plan to ensure: 1.You have what you need to graduate. 2.You qualify to take all the classes you wish to take by the end of your senior year. 3.You meet the entrance requirements of the college(s) of your dreams. 4.Your transcript is as “college competitive” as you wish it to be.

4 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS English: 4 years 40 Credits Math: 3 years 30 Credits Science: 3 years 30 Credits Social Science: 3 years 30 Credits Physical Education: 2 years 20 Credits Foreign Language: 2 years 20 Credits Visual/Performing Arts: 2 years 20 Credits Electives 30 Credits Total 220 Credits Additional Requirements: Community Service: 40 hours First Aid/Safety Certificate Fitness Test

Science (your choice) You can request 6 or 7 classes. 6 th class (VPA, Elective, or World Language) 7 th class (offered before or after school) Your 6 th and 7 th class choices (if you opt for 7) will be selected from the VPA, World Languages, or Elective categories. PE Athletics is in addition to these courses (Freshmen cannot play a sport as their 6 th class). REQUIRED COURSES

6 Leland Schedule: 0 and 7 th period Leland is on a modified block schedule Most freshmen will take six classes and get out of school at 2pm on Mondays and 3pm the remainder of the week Limited seventh period and zero period options

8 MATHEMATICS Sign up for the course you expect to be in next year SJUSD will provide us with a list of SJUSD middle school students who pass the HE exam in Algebra and Geometry We do not transcript courses taken at private middle schools, but we will allow students to accelerate

9 Conceptual Physics Biology or Honors Biology Chemistry or Honors Chemistry (Concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 or higher) (Algebra 2 or higher) SCIENCE ( Geometry or higher)

10 MATH/SCI. IN SUMMER SCHOOL? In order to place your student in the proper level class: Submit an Outside Credit Approval form by May 1 st Submit a transcript or letter of assurance by July 15 UC schools now require that all students pass Geometry with a C or better. If you take this course in a summer program before the freshman year or if you take it in a non A-G approved institution, you will need to self- report it to the UC system if asked for proof your student successfully completed the class with a C.

11 Outside Credit Approval An outside credit approval form must be submitted and approved by a Leland academic counselor prior to a student enrolling in any outside course SJUSD no longer accepts on-line VPA, Science, or PE for transfer credit Form is due to Leland main office by May 1 st We will send forms back to feeder SJUSD middle schools with approval status.

13 SJCC Registration/Placement Test Students must dual enrolled with both Leland and San Jose City College in order to take Chinese, Japanese, or ASL Please refer to Concurrent Enrollment Process Handout and see SJCC representative outside cafeteria Assessment dates for Leland students at SJCC are May 17 th or May 18 th at 4:30pm You must call to confirm appointment

15 Speech and Debate Freshmen students who take Speech and Debate (Dramatic Interpretation) must take it as a 7 th class Speech and Debate is offered 6 th and 7 th period

16 Performing Arts Auditions Students interested in participating in Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, or Chamber Choir must audition. Email Rian Rodriguez at rgrodriguez@sjusd.org to schedule an audition. rgrodriguez@sjusd.org

18 ALL 9 th Grade Students take P.E. If you wish to ALSO play a sport: Please enter the course number of the season(s) you are interested in participating and circle the sport you are interested in on your form. Our Athletic Director Mike Sparrer is available outside cafeteria for questions. NOTE: All students must have physicals before starting practice. Check the athletic website for starting dates. ATHLETICS

19 SELECTING ALTERNATES To ensure you get a Science and/or Visual Art class of your choosing, select 1 ALTERNATE for each of your choices in these two departments. Do this for Intro to Computer Science as well. For example, if you are selecting Conceptual Physics as your 1 st choice, you may wish to select Biology as your alternate science selection. No need to do this for Math, English, Foreign Language, P.E., or Social Studies.

20 ONLINE REGISTRATION Use course codes on pink form to sign up on line Online registration must be completed by April 1st. User name: Student ID# Password: iimmddyy (first initial, last initial, birth month in 2 digits, day in two digits, year in two digits.

21 SPECIAL ED: RSP & SDC Students Please fill out your Course Selection Form, but DO NOT ENTER your selected courses online. Submit your form to your current RSP/SDC case manager (at Bret Harte), or deliver it directly to Leland (main office) if you attend elsewhere. The Leland Case Manager (that your student will be assigned to at Leland) will complete the online registration process for you to make sure your selections are compliant with your IEP.

22 WE NEED A COPY OF YOUR FORM… Please fill out TWO COPIES of your Course Selection Form. 1. One copy you take with you so you can complete your course selections online (you need the numbers associated with each course to make your selections online). 2. You must leave the 2 nd copy with me tonight. I need a copy of every student’s form so I have a Hardcopy of your schedule. Please drop it in the box by the door as you exit.

23 On Line Course Selection Due Your courses must be selected on- line by Friday, April 1 st ! This presentation will be posted on our academic counseling site linked on our home page

24 Choose wisely… You can only drop/change courses during the first 3 days of school, and… only if there are still openings in the course(s) you wish to change/add.

25 Freshmen Orientation Orientation is scheduled for last week of July Students will participate in team- building activities and pick up their schedules Parents may attend a brief informational session

26 VISIT OUR INFORMATION TABLES… Math Enrichment: Get support in a math class you have struggled with, or accelerate Athletics: Join a Charger athletic team… GET INVOLVED! SJCC: Get more information about whether taking a college class is right for your child Cheer: Find out about the program & tryouts. Yearbook: You can’t put a price on memories!
