2. Preliminaries  In small groups, discuss the challenges of the form of the English sonnet (e.g., following the rhyme scheme, having fourteen lines, making sure each quatrain makes a point, and ending succinctly).

3. Objectives:  The students will be able to explain the meter and rhyme scheme of a sonnet.  The students will be able to write their own sonnets.

4. Focus Lesson: Writing…  Handouts  Sonnet Writing  Sample Sonnets  Small Groups:  In pairs, read the example sonnets and discuss how the sonnets approach the subject of love.  Brainstorm about how your sonnet will either respond to one of the sonnets on the handout or a poem from homework or present a new theme on love.  Begin writing their own sonnets using their partners as a soundboard.

5. Homework: Writing…  Finish writing your sonnets.  Due 1/15 for 30 homework points
