iPads There are two iPads per table group. – Spades, collect one iPad and work with clubs – Diamonds, collect one iPad and work with hearts Computers may be used to collect data if iPads are not available, OR to send data/materials via email WC 20 is posted on-line at Mr. Summers’ website When done return iPads to correct storage space and plug-in to recharge

Tale of Two Cities You will be putting together everything you have learned about weather and climate for this mini project. Your task is to choose TWO CITIES in the United States that are in different states, explain their weather and climate, and explain why their climates are similar and why they are different.
4
Choosing your cities You will have 10 minutes to choose your two cities from different states. To help you use www.weatherbase.com to see the list of possible cities.www.weatherbase.com Once you have chosen your cities record their elevation, longitude and latitude.

Maps Explore Part 2. (1) On the attached map label both of your cities. Color and label the map to show significant landforms and bodies of water
10
Explore Part 2 (2) and (3) Use Google Maps to examine your cities more closely Draw (or print at home) a map (or detailed sketch) of each of your cites Include significant local or regional landforms and bodies of water

City Data Find your cities’ climate and weather data at www.weatherbase.com. www.weatherbase.com Record all data in your WC 20 packet.
14
Graphing Data Use the graph paper provided to graph the data collected in for each city. Complete four graphs as required. Attach your graphs to each page. Be sure to review your data for quality and accuracy: 1)Title 2)Legend (or key) included 3)X-axis marked and labeled, clearly and neatly 4)Y-axis marked and labeled, clearly and neatly 5)Data for City 1 is plotted accurately, clearly and neatly 6)Data for City 2 is plotted accurately, clearly and neatly

CFU W&C Learning Target H 1. Which of the following is an example of climate: a)Last month’s blizzard on the East coast b)Hurricane Katrina in 2005 c)The tornado that hit Washington, Illinois on November 18, 2013 d)Seattle’s wet winters and mild summers
29
CFU W&C Learning Target H 2. El Nino is caused by a)A slowing of trade winds over the Pacific Ocean b)A rise in the thermal energy in the Pacific Ocean c)A lack of upwelling in the Pacific Ocean d)Drought in parts of Asia and flooding in South America
31
CFU W&C Learning Target H 3. What is the cause of deep ocean currents? a)The prevailing winds b)The waves c)The rotation of the Earth on its axis d)Convection currents in the ocean
32
Deep Ocean Current Model Convection Current in Water PoleEquator
33
CFU W&C Learning Target H 4. What is the cause of surface ocean currents? a)The prevailing winds b)The waves c)The rotation of the Earth on its axis d)Convection currents in the ocean
34
CFU W&C Learning Target H 5. Montreal, Canada and Paris, France are at a similar latitude (distance from the Equator), but have very different climates. Using what you know about surface ocean currents explain why their climates are different.
35
Correct Answer There is a warm ocean current that brings warm water from the tropics north towards Paris. (1 pt) The air above the water takes on the temperature of the water creating a warm air mass. (1 pt) This warm air mass keeps Paris warmer than Montreal even though they are at the same latitude. (1 pt)
36
Exceptional Answer Montreal, Canada is much colder than Paris, France because France is near the Gulf Stream, which brings warm water from Central America to Europe. Once the warm water reaches France, it transfers thermal energy to the cold air above it creating a warm air mass over France. Montreal, on the other hand, is near a cold current from the Arctic. When the water reaches Montreal, the air is warmer than the water so the air transfers thermal energy to the cold water. The air loses a lot of heat and crates a cold air mass over Montreal. This is why Montreal is much colder than Paris.
37
Acceptable answer There is a warm ocean current that brings warm water from the tropics north towards Montreal. (1 pt) The air above the water takes on the temperature of the water creating a warm air mass. (1 pt) This warm air mass keeps Montreal warmer than Paris, which has a cold current near it, even though they are at the same latitude. (1 pt)

Now 1.Take out WC 20. 2.Goal: Complete ALL by the end of the period. 3.If needed, get an iPad or laptop and log on. 4.Finished? a)Study Knowledge Map (10 min) b)Read (your choice)
