2  Group that adopts values that run “counter” to the mainstream.  Valued youth, spontaneity, and freedom of expression.  Sometimes called “hippies “ they promoted love, peace, and freedom  Experimented with new styles of clothing and music, drugs, and free attitudes towards sex.

3  Theory of political, social, and economic equality for men and women.

4  Author of “The Feminine Mystique,” a book that helped inspire the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s.

5  National Organization for Women  Est. by Betty Friedan  Dedicated to winning true equality for all women.

6  Equal Rights Amendment  Would have guaranteed gender equality under the law.  Passed in congress, but did not become an amendment because not enough states ratified it.

7  Co-founded Ms. Magazine, a feminist magazine.  Its title was meant to protest the social custom identifying women by marital status (Mrs. v Miss)

8  Conservative political activist who denounced women’s liberation as “a total assault on family, marriage, and children.”  Worked to defeat the ERA.

15  Federal agency devoted to protecting the “entire ecological chain.”  Cleaned up and protected the environment as well as limited and eliminating pollutants that posed a risk to public health.
