1 Pacific Northwest Coast By: Bridget Coleman, Emma Lomax, Cecilia Rozema

2 Location Kwakiutl: Vancouver Island. Smaller groups within larger groups. Traded with English and Spanish. Mostly hunters and gathers, little Meso-American influence. Chinook: Non-nomadic. About 15 miles away from other tribes. Lewis and Clark. Makah: Olympic peninsula. Large fishing community. Groups on islands.

3 Environment Plentiful and fertile area. Mild climate, fertile land and heavy rainfall. Surplus of food due to water resources. Lived near and depended on the water for food and drink. Relied on cedar trees for building.

4 Economy They had a highly complex system composed of various social statuses. High status, Secondary status, Low status, No status. Fisherman and sea hunters traded with various other communities. Their trade partners expanded to other countries. When one moved up to a higher rank, tribes threw potlatches to celebrate.

5 Political Structure Kwakiutl- Loosely governed. Today groups elect a chief councilor to run the tribe. Chiefs oldest daughter would marry, and become chief. Chinook- Run by chiefs in village but one could rule over more than one village. No homeless. No one ruler was set in stone. Makah- Had a chief but were less structured. Very few people.

6 Religion Believed in a being called Echanie, or Talipas (coyote). Specific rules were imposed. Believed in immortality of the soul, and of the spirit world. Based on totemism and animism. The custom of flattening your child's head was very commonly practiced.

7 Roles of Women Women were the homebuilders of the society. They prepared food and made tools and weapons. The women provided medicinal skills. Created various forms of art. They were responsible for household chores.

8 Arts and Literature They used totem poles to tell stories. Had no written language. Known for their various artistic exploits. Used art to be representative.
