Readily Available Biobased Products Sandra Cannon May 4, 2006

3 Why Is the U.S. Department of Energy Buying Biobased Products? Be an early adopter of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act Section 9002 Support DOE mission of energy security By substituting domestically produced biobased products for those produced from petroleum By co-producing valuable biobased products along with biobased fuel to make biorefineries economical Focus is on biobased products that displace petroleum.

4 What Are DOE’s Results to Date?

5 DOE Experience DOE-HQ, INL, LANL, NETL, PNNL, PPPL, Y-12 Biobased Cleaning Supplies General purpose cleaner Windows Floors Parts cleaner Absorbent Green Seal specs & recs: www.greenseal.org www.greenseal.org

6 DOE Experience Pacific Northwest National Lab EcoPurchasing Biodiesel for Heating Biobased products since 2001 2006 - 10% biodiesel and 90% low-sulfur diesel in backup heating system Biodiesel reduces sulfur oxide emissions by another 10%

7 Biobased Spray Foam Insulation* Meets Same Specs as Oilbased Insulation Made from soy Density 0.5 lb/cu ft (ASTM D1622) Compressive strength 20-30 psi (ASTM D1621) Flame spread <20 (ASTM E84) Smoke development <400 (ASTM D2863) Contains/emits no VOCs, CFCs, formaldehyde, or HCFCs Passed UPITT Test for off gassing toxins when burned *Meets Appendix A standard for use in Weatherization Assistance Program DOE Experience Weatherization Assistance Program EcoPurchasing Biobased Insulation

8 Biobased roofing sealant * Meets Same Specs as Oilbased Sealant Made from soy Energy Star approved Single-coat application Exceeds UL Class A Flame Ratings 100% Resistant to mold, algae, bacteria (ASTM D3273) 10-year labor and material warranty “ELMS solved all of our roofing needs while providing the energy savings and environmental impact that our institution was looking for” – Brad Popovich, Facilities Director, John G. Shedd Aquarium, Chicago, Illinois. *Meets Appendix A standard for use in Weatherization Assistance Program DOE Experience Weatherization Assistance Program EcoPurchasing Biobased Roofing Sealant

9 DOE Experience Princeton Plasma Physics Lab Biobased Hydraulic Fluid for Elevators Specified in Request for Proposal for new elevator Vendors initially said cost would add $12K Actual additional cost $3K Insurance against future cost of hazardous waste disposal in case of leak or spill

10 DOE Experience Princeton Plasma Physics Lab Biobased Hydraulic Gate

11 DOE Experience Brookhaven National Lab Biobased Hydraulic Fluid EQUIPMENT Motor pool hydraulic lift system (FY98) Three large lawn mowers (FY01) Garbage trucks (FY02) BENEFITS Former cost of spills $2500-$3500 per spill Present cost of spills less than $1000 per spill. http://www.bnl.gov/bnlweb/ pubaf/pr/2002/bnlpr071702. htm

12 DOE Experience Pacific Northwest National National Lab Biobased Carpet Backing: 55% biobased content by weight (polyurethane from soybeans) Secondary Backing: 100% post-consumer recycled content Facing: 25% recycled content and recyclable into carpet fiber Price: Comparable to other high quality commercial carpets Qualifies for LEED (Green Building Rating System) credits Meets CRI requirements for volatile organic compounds (no vinyl)
