Wilmot Proviso Texas Missouri Compromise threatened Fugitive slaves Slavery in D.C. The south threatening succession at every turn

Proviso that passed the House of Representatives but not the senate multiple times. Said that any territory gained in the Mexican Cession could not legally have slavery (Texas was not included because it was an independent nation that became part of the nation.

Compromise of 1850 claimed that the Wilmot Proviso was irrelevant because none of the territory gained would likely be slave states anyhow. Claimed that each territory should have the right to choose slave laws for themselves.

The independent nation of Texas still had major war debt. However, because of its homogeneity with the United States Texas was in favor of statehood. The compromise of 1850 gives Texas statehood and claimed its national debts in return for Texas giving up some territory in New Mexico and north of the 36 th parallel.

The south argued that northern states should not be able to interfere with their right to own slaves, meaning that run-away should not be protected by northern anti-slavery laws. The Compromise of 1850 strengthened fugitive slave laws. The slave trade was outlawed in D.C. even though the right to own slaves remained.
