Technical Description Sewn on two cords laced through two holes in the boards, with the ends of the slips pasted back towards the spine. Separate pastedowns. Spine glued up without liners. Boards covered in beige paper printed in red prior to covering. Dimensions 100 x 65 x 15 mm. Decorative Description Paper-covered boards with four different woodcut scenes. Upper cover, a woman teaching two girls to dance (at top); a seated woman and a boy holding a book. Lower cover, a cockfight scene (at top); a robed man leaning on a cane giving or receiving something from a man on horseback. All surrounded by a variety of printers' ornaments. Other Details Ruari McLean illustrates this book in Victorian Publishers' Book-bindings in Paper, Berkeley, 1983, p. 18, but the woodcut illustrations on the covers differ from those on this copy. End Papers Single folded handmade laid paste-down and flyleaf. Decorative Description Sprinkled half leather calfskin binding with sprinkled paper sides. On the front cover is a gold stamped coronet-covered letter E with the date 1776. The spine has a beige title label with the letters ARS, LOQ all gilt. The title, author and date are gilt in the second panel. In the center of the other panels is a large azured six pointed star. The sides are covered in a "Kattunpapier" of a leafy design around a yellow square with pink circle and a pink round design with a six pointed star. All the other panels are framed with a double gilt line and filled with the gilt crest of Richard Colt Hoare (a griffin head). Other Details Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Baronet FRS (9 December 1758 19 May 1838) was an English antiquarian, archaeologist, artist, and traveler of the 18th and 19th centuries, the first major figure in the detailed study of the history of his home county, Wiltshire.
