Sewing Equipment

Tape measure – used to take body measurements; 60” long

Yardstick – used for placing pattern on the straight of the grain; 36” long

Hem Gauge – used for measuring hems or other short spaces

Hand Needles – used for hand sewing; called sharps

Pins – to hold fabric in place for sewing; dressmakers pins are used for sewing

Pin Cushion – used to hold pins and needles while sewing

Dressmaker – longer than 6 inches & have a handle for fingers and a small handle for the thumb Pinking – cut zig zagged; used to finish seams or fabric edges

Scissors – less than 6 inches long; both handles the same size; used to cut threads while sewing, clipping, and trimming

Tracing Wheel – tool used to transfer pattern markings to fabric

Tracing Paper – paper used with tracing wheel to transfer pattern markings to fabric

Seam Ripper – used to rip out a seam or unwanted stitch

Thimble – used to protect your fingers while sewing by hand

Steam Iron – used to press a garment during construction

Dry Iron – used to press pattern pieces on low setting

Pressing Cloth – used to protect right side of garment when pressing

Ironing Board – used to press on; should be well padded and adjustable to height

Sleeve Board – used to press seams and hard to reach areas
19
Tailor’s Ham – used to press shaped areas
