What is Matter? MATTER is defined as ANYTHING that has MASS and VOLUME. What is Mass? MASS is the amount of matter in an object. What is Volume? VOLUME is the amount of space an object takes up.
3
Measuring Mass Mass is the amount of matter in an object. The basic unit of mass is the gram. The abbreviation for the gram is g. The smallest unit of measurement is the milligram (mg). The largest unit of measurement is the kilogram (kg). A gram is about the size of a paper clip. It would take 1,000 milligrams to equal 1 gram. It would take 1000 grams to equal 1 kilogram. In standard measurement, a kilogram equals 2.2 pounds – about the size of a large book.

Measuring Volume Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. The liter is the standard unit of measurement used to measure volume. It is abbreviated with a capital L. The smallest unit of measurement is the milliliter (mL). The largest unit of measurement is the kiloliter (kL). It would take 1000 milliliters to equal one liter. There are about 20 drops of liquid in a milliliter. A liter is equal to half of a two-liter bottle of soda. 1,000 liters equal one kiloliter. You would used kiloliters to measure large amount of liquid. You use the term liter or milliliter when measuring liquids. When finding the volume of solids, use the term cubic meter (m³) or cubic centimeter (cm³).

Measuring Length, Height or Distance To measure the length, height, or distance of matter, the basic unit of measurement is the meter. Kilometers (km) measure a very large distance and is equal to a little more than half of a standard mile. Centimeters (cm) measure a small length, height, or distance. They are smaller than an inch. Millimeters (mm) measure a very small length, height or distance.
