1 1 Akela Project Overview

2 DWC - LDC Steve Curry recently became Chair of the DWC Leadership Development Committee (LDC). The LDC developed a Charter that outlines its mission. For us, we need to align our Akela Project Training with the overall LDC charter. 2

3 Per LDC Charter Roles & Functions “Conduct and/or coordinate council-level leadership development and training events.” 3

4 Per LDC Charter Vision Statement “Specifically, the desired end state is to achieve a level of leadership development and training that results in all unit adult leadership having completed position-specific and youth protection leader training and at least one unit-level direct contact leader in each unit having completed the Wood Badge program. “ 4

5 Synergy Have Akela Project participants upon completion complete position specific training. –Need to review current syllabi for position specific training and incorporate into training. Need to avoid word-for-word training but instead spread it out among the 2 days. –Make sure it is entered into participant’s record on file. Have Akela Project be an “entrance ramp” to other training venues. –Perhaps have Lion/Tiger Parent Camp participants receive $25 dollars off if they attend full Akela Project the falling year? –Perhaps have Akela Project participants receive $50 off Wood Badge registration for the following 2 years? 5

6 Instill a culture of initial and continuing leadership training and development Although not specifically noted in the LDC Charter, this is a desired change long term for DWC. “Every Scout deserves a trained leader” –Lead by example –Since we are volunteers, we only can use “carrots” instead of “carrots and sticks”. DWC will not institute a requirement for position specific training unless the infrastructure for consistent, quality training through a variety of venues is in place. 6

7 Carrots #1 – Make Akela Project a premier training experience that earns praise from the first day on exceeding participants’ expectations. Have staff and participants based on their experience become natural cheerleaders for the program. –Develop unique recognition for staff and participants. –Empower them to easily recruit new participants. Website, quality marketing materials, questions quickly and accurately answered. 7
