Case Study: Energy Security in the USA/California By the end of this lesson you will: 1.Be able to define renewable and non- renewable energy sources and give examples of each. 2.Understand the advantages, disadvantages and impacts of the different energy sources available.

What might the ENERGY FUTURE be? Ensure you have your table from last lesson fully completed including devising your own ranking for energy sources. Write a briefly explanation of your ranking/choice of the highest and lowest ranks.

Dependency; wastefulness; lack of fossil fuel supply (energy insecurity) Huge surplus; inefficient use; energy as a political weapon? Rapidly growing demand; use of pollution sources such as high sulphur coal; health impacts; impact on global fossil fuel prices Energy poverty; dependency on foreign TNCs to exploit supply (Nigeria, Sudan) Supply security; role of unstable regions in fossil fuel supply; link between nuclear power and weapons. Reserves; questions of developing these in the Arctic, Antarctic and other sensitive areas

Energy Security in the USA “The price of oil is just scaring the American People to death” US Senator Pete Domenici, June 2008 What did he mean by this statement? Why might rising oil prices scare Americans more than other people in society?

The USA’s own view of its energy security seems to be pessimistic: Some solutions include a pledge to build new nuclear power plants, and invest heavily in bioethanol / biodiesel, to reduce dependency on imported oil.

TASK: Read the provided sheet and highlight. Complete the provided Case Study framework using the sheet and provided weblinks (see email). Try to include FACTS and DATES to support your points. YOU MUST PRINT THIS OFF as it is vital for your folder.

Independent Study Independent Study is VITAL at A2 level. Begin to read around the energy topic online. Bring in an article on energy security you have researched using the internet or newspapers to the first lesson next week – you also need to write a short précis review of what the article is about on the back of it. Ensure your case study is complete and you have read the information on all of the provided sheets this week. See weekly email for more links!
