20
Interesting Fact... In the 1940s, most people wouldn’t have been able to afford a lot of meat and it was also rationed.
21
Remember... Meat has lots of protein to help our bodies grow and repair themselves! Try to eat more beans and lentils for protein instead of lots of meat We only need 2 palm-sized portions a day! Look at your own palm and look how easy that is to get!
22
Did people in the 1940s eat... 3. Fish
23
Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here
24
The correct answer was... they ate MORE fish!
25
Interesting Fact... Fish wasn’t rationed in the 1940s, so it was more available than meat was Fish is in the same food-group as meat, so it’s also a good source of protein.
26
Remember... Try to get 1 portion of oily fish a week, as it is really good for our heart and brain!
27
Did people in the 1940s eat... 4. Fast-foods & takeaways
28
Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here
29
The correct answer was... they ate LESS fast foods & takeaways! Now 1940
30
Interesting Fact... Fast food restaurants like McDonalds and KFC wouldn’t have been around then, and neither would Domino’s or Chinese and Indian restaurants! They had a few ‘Fish ‘n’ Chip’ shops, but this would be a very special treat!
31
Remember... These foods are okay to have from time to time as a treat but try not to have them too often as they are very high in fat and salt.
32
Did people in the 1940s eat... 5. Carbohydrates
33
Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here
34
The correct answer was... g they ate the SAME amount of carbohydrates! Now 1940
35
BUT... The TYPE of carbohydrates we eat are different!
36
Interesting Fact... They ate lots of carbohydrates to keep them full, so they weren’t hungry between meals to snack on unhealthy foods. The bread they ate was called the “national wheatmeal loaf”. This bread was much higher in fibre than white bread!
37
Remember... Wholemeal (brown) bread is much better for us than white bread because it’s much higher in fibre, which keeps us fuller for longer!
38
Did people in the 1940s eat... 6. Dairy & Alternatives
39
Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here
40
The correct answer was... g they ate the SAME amount of dairy! Now 1940
41
BUT... Like carbohydrates, the TYPE of dairy we eat is a bit different!
42
Interesting Fact... The milk back then would have all been whole milk (blue lid), but today we have other options! Try to drink semi-skimmed (green lid) as it is lower in fat.
43
They would have eaten a little bit of cheese, but not as much as we do today! A little bit of cheese is good for us but not too much as it is high in fat! One portion of cheese is about the size of a small matchbox.
44
Remember... You need to get 4 portions of dairy a day to keep your bones, teeth & heart healthy and strong!
45
Did people in the 1940s eat... 7. Salt
46
Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here
47
The correct answer was... they ate LESS salt! Now 1940
48
Interesting Fact... In the 1940s, all food was cooked from scratch! Salt was used to add flavour to otherwise quite flavour-less food... But today lots of salt already comes in foods we buy!
49
Remember... We don’t want to add any salt to our food since we’re already getting enough Today we have lots of exciting herbs & spices to flavour food instead!
50
Did people in the 1940s eat... 8. Sugar
51
Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here
52
The correct answer was... they ate LESS sugar! Now 1940
53
Interesting Fact... We eat over twice the amount of sugar they ate in the 1940s! Sweets & chocolate were only given as a very special treat, and things like fizzy drinks were not commonly available.
54
Remember... Not only is sugar bad for our teeth, but if we eat too much and don’t burn it off, it will turn into fat in our bodies! It’s okay to eat these foods once in a while as a treat, but try to just have one small treat a day.
55
Did people in the 1940s eat... 9. Fat
56
Nice Try... Click here to see the right answer!here
57
The correct answer was... they ate LESS fat! Now 1940
58
Interesting Fact... There are two different types of fats – saturated and unsaturated Unsaturated fats come from plants, like olive oil or in an avocado or nuts. Getting a little bit of this type of fat is good for our hearts. Saturated fats come from animals and are in a lot of our unhealthy foods! So try not to eat too much of this type!
59
Remember... We can cook from scratch instead of always getting ready-meals and takeaways to help reduce our saturated fat intake!
60
