The MFD Writing Center in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) “The MFDWC” Director of ACE: Dr. Kirsten Komara
2
What is the Writing Center? A place to grow as a confident, responsible writer A place to review key points about writing A “judgment-free zone” where you can ask questions about writing
3
Purpose Consultants prompting a conversation about writing assignment Writers actively listening & asking questions to further the conversation To produce better writers!
4
What to Expect in a Session Questions Writer Responds Asks more questions What are the directions for the assignment? What would you like to concentrate on in this session? What is your thesis statement? How did you organize your paper? Tell me in your own words, what are you saying in this sentence? Did you learn anything new in this session?
5
Why do we ask so many questions? We ask questions to get you to think critically. We are not an edit shop where we fix grammar and formatting and return the document. We believe in improving writers’ abilities and to do that we will ask relevant questions to help writers realize how they can develop and hone their own skills.
6
Face –to-Face Writing Session Bring the following to your session: Your professor’s directions Your paper Research documents and sources Your readiness to improve your writing
7
Online & eTutoring If you cannot attend a face-to-face session (online or distance learner), we offer Online and eTutoring (formerly Phone Consultations) sessions through My WC Online. Upload your paper directly to MyWCOnline when you schedule an appointment. If you experience problems with that, email us your paper before your appointment.
