When Will I See You Again?

What is an embedded librarian?  "...to be embedded means to be situated within and among those whom one is serving."  "The librarian who chooses to be embedded becomes involved in the culture in which the class is situated."  "Delivering services in a way that answers user's needs in a timely and personalized way with continuity." Reale, M. (2016). Becoming an Embedded Librarian : Making Connections in the Classroom. Chicago: ALA Editions

Adult Learning Needs  As a person matures, his or her self-concept moves from that of a dependent personality towards one of a self- directing human being.  An adult accumulates a growing reservoir of experience, which is a rich source for learning.  The readiness of an adult to learn is closely related to the developmental task of his or her social role.  Change in time perspective: from future application of knowledge to immediacy of application (problem centered than subject centered).  Motivations are internal rather than external.  Adults need to know why they need to learn something! Knowles, M. S. (1980). The modern practice of adult education: From pedagogy to andragogy. Englewood Cliffs: Prentice Hall/Cambridge.

Really Lucking Out  Every student must start with Tech. For Professional Developments within the first two quads.  The pacing of the three required courses defacto lumps them into a "co-hort" model.  This is a department who is welcome to anyone giving them special attention.  ALL courses committed to being offered both Online and F2F options – s0 already had a strong presence on CMS.

My crazy idea... In FIVE easy steps: 1.Review syllabus and course outlines 2.Overlay ACRL large Frameworks into the three courses after assignment and syllabus review. 3.What do you need NOT what do you want- talking to faculty about real and authentic information literacy learning outcomes 4.Identify appropriate Knowledge Practices for each framework based on professor's "needs". 5.Syllabus based activities.

Online PROS CONS  Use the same power point- same "content".  All assessment and grading occur online as Moodle forums.  You are their "personal librarian".  It is like herding cats!  Currently lack that depth of conversation that comes with f2f.  Harder to assess where they are at in regards to the larger course content.

F2F PROS CONS  Repeat appearances make for fast friends!  Deeper level of conversation- ease research/assignment anxiety.  Familiarity tends to lead to longer instruction sessions- "Group Love".  At times un-realistic expectations – SET BOUNDARIES!

Assessment  Rules to the game:  Low impact- no additional grading for professor  Direct benefit to the larger course assignment/objective- don't make them do additional work outside of building towards the final course paper.  Participation vs. Grades assignment vs. Extra credit – take what you can get!  Examples......  List 2-3 keywords then post 6 brainstorm keywords  Post two scholarly articles from ATLA database in APA format.  Submit a working outline with sources referenced in the margin.  Complete CRAAP test for a.gov website and a.org website.

What Happens Next?  Goals of 2016-2017-2018  Move CRAAP test to Authority is Constructive and Contextual.  Develop pre-assessment and post-assessment tools to evaluate Mapping outcomes.  Incorporate engagement learning for online learners: webinar, skype, virtual office hours.  I'll report back when all the above is completed!
