8 Haiti Earthquake Information Haiti is located on the western side of the island Hispaniola Earthquake occurred on the transform plate boundary between the Caribbean and North American plates The boundary is dominated by a left-lateral strike slip motion and compression Accommodates about 20 mm/y slip eastward to the North American plate (fairly slow) Strike Slip Fault Movement along a fault is horizontal Rocks on either side of the fault slide past each other Sliding forces are called shearing which bend and twist the land If the land gets caught as it slides, an earthquake will happen http://www.schools.utah.gov http://student.ttuhsc.edu
