Flipped Classroom: Incentivizing Preparation Deb Miller Dr. Len Roberson University of North Florida

Agenda  Define Flipped Classroom  Current Research  Strategies to Incent Preparation  Real-life story  Activity

What’s a Flip? http://www.knewton.com/flipped-classroom/

Typical instructional plan HW from last class First exposure to content via lecture Deeper understanding through HW CLASS TIME

FLIPPED instructional plan First exposure to content via video or readings Deeper understanding through activities Some HW and prep for next class CLASS TIME

Four Key Elements (Brame) 1.Expose students to content before class 2.Give incentive to prepare for class 3.Use mechanism for assessing understanding and providing feedback 4.Develop and facilitate in-class activities that focus on high-level cognitive skills

Expose students to content before class http://popcultureandamericanchildhood.com/tag/television/page/6/

Give students an incentive to prepare for class http://th08.deviantart.net/fs70/200H/f/2013/048/6/3/

What do we know? (n=309)  57 percent of faculty using model agree that their flipped classroom is “ extremely successful” or “successful”  80 percent report “ improved mastery of information” and “ improved retention of information  86 percent “strongly agree” or “agree” that student attitudes have improved since adoption Center for Digital Education 2013 Survey (sponsored)

What do we know?  Study comparing 2 sections of a large-enrollment course  Using interactive lecture, no significant difference  Implemented “flipped” method:  Increased student engagement from 45 +/- 5% to 85 +/- 5%  Improved Test Scores from 41 +/- 1% to 74 +/- 1% DesLauriers L, Schelew E, and Wieman C (2011).

Getting Started  Develop content: mini-lectures, screencasts, or readings.  Incentivize preparation: online quizzes, worksheets, short writing assignments  Plan for assessment and feedback  Develop classroom activities
