Introduction to Transformation of Energy Ms. Twardowski Science 8 Green

Which word does NOT belong??? What could be a ‘category’ for the 9 words that go together??? KineticChemicalSoundElectromagneticCumulusPotentialHeatMechanicalSunParticles

Review…fill in the blanks. All matter is made up of _____________. Another word for _______ is _______. Particles do not change _________. Particles can spread out and _________. Particles ___ when they are less dense, and ___ when they are more dense.

Before we start…you need to understand these two definitions/abbreviations. Transformation: When one type of energy “Transforms” (TN) into another. Transfer: When the same type of energy is passed on to another object (TR).

Energy There are two FORMS of energy Electromagnetic (comes from the Sun and can travel through empty space) Mechanical (has to travel through particles/matter)

Energy can never be created or destroyed!!! Energy just transforms “TN” (changes into a different type of energy) or gets transferred “TR” (the energy stays the same type, but is passed on to something else).

Green = Yes/True Red = No/False The two forms of Energy are Electrical and Mechanical.

Green = Yes/True Red = No/False If you needed to, you could create energy.

Types of Energy Kinetic (KE): ANYTHING that is moving. Potential (PE): Stored energy that is waiting to transform into another type of energy. Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE): Energy that is increased or decreased depending on how high off the surface of the Earth the object is. Examples???

Kinetic Energy (KE) ANYTHING that is moving has KE.

Potential Energy Energy that is WAITING to do something.

Gravitational Potential Energy Depends on how high the object is off the surface of the Earth. If the object fell, gravity would pull it down. The higher off the ground, the more GPE. Closer to the ground, less GPE.

Green = Yes/True Red = No/False An example of KINETIC energy is a car parked at the top of a hill.

Sound (sound) Sound is a mechanical wave that HAS TO travel through matter (particles).

Food Energy (FE) Energy that you get when you eat. Also known as Chemical Energy (CE) because your body uses chemical reactions to turn your food into Glucose/Sugar, which gives you energy.

Electrical Energy (EE) The energy that happens in your brain. Your brain actually puts out electrical impulses. These impulses can tell you what you see and hear, etc. We will learn about this later.

Heat Energy (HE) MOST energy, because of FRICTION (particles rubbing together), transforms into Heat Energy if it is not used for something else.

Forces (the following things are NOT types of energy). But these forces CAN make energy transfer/transform GravityFrictionPull/PushTensionElasticElectromagneticsLiftThrustDrag

Ticket Out!!! With your partner – Make a TWO-Column List. PUT BOTH NAMES ON THE PAPER. In the first column – give examples of things that would be considered Kinetic Energy (KE) In the second column – give examples of situations that would be considered Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE). Turn in on your way out.

Green = Yes/True Red = No/False Gravity is a type of energy.

How to calculate speed. S=d/t (Speed = Distance divided by the AVERAGE Time) The distance is ALWAYS going to be the same for this formula/lab (100 meters). When calculating speed, use the AVERAGE time! The one you found by adding all five trials and dividing by five.

Summarize…

Let’s do the Lab Activity! #1-Let’s get the ball rolling. Roll solid and hollow golf ball down ramp at different heights (1-5 blocks) Record time it takes golf ball to roll 100 centimeters (cm). Complete 5 trials for EACH block height. Calculate speed for each block height.
