ORGAN SYSTEMS In the hierarchy of living things, organ systems….. Made up of: _________________________ Makes up an: __________________________

INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM Comprised of: skin (including hair, nails, and sweat glands) Protects underlying tissues, regulates body temperature, and has houses sensory receptors.

SKELETAL SYSTEM Comprised of: bones, ligaments, and cartilage. Provide framework for the body, allow muscle attachments, and helps the body move.

MUSCULAR SYSTEM Comprised of: muscles…. Duh Provides force to move body parts, maintains posture, and is the source of the majority of your body heat.

NERVOUS SYSTEM Comprised of: the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sense organs. Gathers information from surroundings, analyzes them, and sends signals for actions throughout the body.

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Comprised of: pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, and adrenal glands. Secretes chemical messengers (hormones) which alter metabolism in targeted cells.

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM Comprised of the heart, veins, arteries, capillaries, and blood. Transports gases, nutrients, hormones and wastes throughout the body.

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM Comprised of spleen, lymphatic vessels, lymph fluid, lymph nodes, and thymus. Transports fluid between tissues back into bloodstream and defends the body against intruders.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Comprised of: mouth, tongue, teeth, salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, and large intestine. Receives, breaks down, and absorbs nutrients from food.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Comprised of: nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. Takes in and releases air as well as exchanges gas between blood and the air.

URINARY SYSTEM Comprised of: kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra. Remove waste from the blood and maintain water and electrolyte balances in the body.

REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM Comprised of: testes, penis, ovaries, uterus, vagina, etc. Produce and maintain female and male sex cells. Females support development of embryos to birth a child.
