Heat: Rumford concluded that heat must be a form of energy. Joule investigated the relationship between heat and motion. The amount of heat produced depends on the amount of motion.
3
Molecules in Motion: What are some examples that demonstrate that motion produces heat? Rubbing your hands together to keep warm
4
Molecules in Motion: Scientists knew that: Energy is needed (to set an object in motion)… Matter is made up of tiny particles called molecules, which are always in motion… Concluded that: HEAT is a form of energy and that it is related to the motion of molecules.
5
Heat Transfer: The movement of heat from a warmer object to a cooler one.
6
Heat Transfer: There are 3 methods of heat transfer: Conduction Convection Radiation
7
Conduction: Conduction = heat is transferred through a substance, or from one substance to another, by direct contact of molecules. Conduction takes place best in solids
8
Conduction:
9
Convection: Heat energy is transferred through liquids and gases by means of up and down movements called = Convection Currents.
10
Radiation: Heat energy is transferred through empty space by Radiation.
