DO NOW: Maps 1)Take out HW so we can review it-do not hand in! (Make sure your name is on the top!) 2) Answer the following questions: a. What is a map? b. What is a map key? c. What is a compass rose? d. What is “scale?” e. What is a globe?

Homework Study!! Geography Quiz tomorrow!!

Map: Definition and Features What is a map? A graphic representation of the earth’s surface drawn to scale, as seen from above Uses colors, symbols, and labels to represent features found on the ground –Key=a legend used to explain the meaning of each of the symbols used. For example, a star in a country represents the capital –Compass Rose: indicates direction –Scale: approximate distances

Cartographer: A person who makes maps

Types of Maps Climate maps Economic or resource maps Population Density Physical maps: shows identifiable landmarks such as mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, etc. Political maps: show governmental boundaries of countries, states, and counties, the location of major cities, and they usually include significant bodies of water Road maps: a map of roads, and possibly other features, to aid in navigation Topographic maps: shows quantitative representation of relief using contour lines

Map Projections A means of represent a globe (3D) on a flat (2D) surface

Types of Map Projections Three basic categories: conic, cylindrical, flattenable Maps show 4 things: direction, distance, shape, and size Only a globe can show all 4 with accuracy at same time

Goode’s Interrupted Projection (Equal Area) Advantage: + True Size & Shape of Landmasses Disadvantage: -Distances Distorted

Robinson’s Projection Advantages: +Only minor distortions in size, distance, and shape of landmasses Disadvantages: -Polar Areas appear Flat

Mercator Projection Advantages: +Shows true directions & shapes of landmasses Disadvantages: -Distances not true -Size of landmasses near N and S Poles exaggerated

Winkel Tripel Most often used Advantages +Balance between size and shape of land areas, including polar areas Disadvantages –E & W edges more distorted
