1 Intro to Science and Safety Review for Test (Solutions)

2 Qualitative and Quantitative Observations Recall our “Find the missing cookie” activity on the first day of class. We had to record our qualitative and quantitative observations about each of our cookies in order to pick it out of a line-up! 1. Below is a list of data. Decide whether each statement is qualitative or quantitative. a)The sample contained 3 different types of bacteria.quantitative b)The patient had a temperature 102 degrees. quantitative c)The parrots range from bright green to dark red. qualitative d)The balloon increased in size from 5 inches to 8 inches around. quantitative e)The rock sample consisted of 25 grams of quartz quantitative f)The rock sample was reddish brownish. qualitative g)The sample with the baking soda appeared bubbly qualitative

3 The Scientific Method Recall our “Drops on a Penny” lab. We used the Scientific Method to answer our question “How many drops can fit one side of a penny?” 2. What are the six (6) steps we learned to follow the Scientific Method? Hint: Remember the acronym: Peter Rabbit Has Eaten Ripe Carrots. Write a brief explanation for each step! Problem – the question you are trying to solve Research – gather information before the experiment Hypothesis – predict what will happen Experiment – list of materials; steps of procedure Results – record observations Conclusion – summarize results

4 An independent variable is the variable you have control over. A dependent variable is what you can choose to and manipulate. The dependent variable is what you are measuring during the experiment. 3. Complete the following statements by circling the correct terms! a) In the penny lab, the dependent variable was the (drops of water/side of the coin) b) The independent variable was the (drops of water/side of the coin)
