2 Intro. Problem Task The Buzz Topics Honeybee Hive Pollination Presentation Letter Rubric Conclusion DICTIONARY Go Back Go Forward Spring is here, but there is a big problem. When you go to get your bike out of the shed you notice honeybees swarming around a hollow tree right beside the shed door! Mom, dad, and your sister run over to see what all of your screeching is about. Your dad grabs an ax to chop the tree down. Your mom tells him to stop so she can call an exterminator. Just then your sister shouts “NO! Honeybees are important! We need them!” Now what? You want your bike, but you don’t know what to do with the honeybees. Why did your sister say that bees are important? Do we really need them? What do they do anyway? HELP!

3 Intro. Problem Task The Buzz Topics Honeybee Hive Pollination Presentation Letter Rubric Conclusion DICTIONARY Go Back Go Forward BUSY AS A BEE Research: Each person in your group will become a honeybee researcher. You will gather information about honeybees, record your information on research sheets, and keep your research organized in your scientific binder. Presentation: Choose one of the three topics from the honeybee research. Have a meeting with your group members to discuss how you will present this information. Each person MUST have a part. Be creative! Letter: Your letter should follow the format of a friendly letter. You must state what you want them to do with the hive, and use important information from your research to support your request. friendly letter SECOND TASK (individual): Each group member will also be responsible for writing a letter to persuade your parents to either leave the hive hanging, call an exterminator, or call a beekeeper. FIRST TASK (group): Work with your group to find information about honeybees. This will help you to decide if honeybees are important AND what you should do with that hive!!

Pick one of the three honeybee topics that you found most interesting. You will enter into a new group with people who chose the same topic as you. Work together to decide how you would like to present your topic to the class. Here are some ideas. Prepare a skit and act it out Create a WordleWordle Make a detailed diorama Create a puppet show Write a song or a poem Use Glogster to create a posterGlogster Present research with poster boards and diagrams Create a VokiVoki YOU MUST CHECK WITH ME BEFORE PREPARING YOUR PRESENTATION After you have completed your research, it is time to present! Remember to include any interesting information that you found in your research !

10 Intro. Problem Task The Buzz Topics Honeybee Hive Pollination Presentation Letter Rubric Conclusion DICTIONARY Go Back Go Forward PERSUASIVE LETTER Dear Students, You have all been working so hard, and I am very proud of you. Now you can begin your individual task. Think back to the reason you were asked to gather information about honeybees. Your bike is in the shed, and you want to get it out so you can take it for a spin. However, the hive is still next to the door, and it is buzzing with bees! At this point, you should have some ideas about what can be done and who can help. Think back to your original questions. Are honeybees important? Do we really need them? Use one of these graphic organizers to brainstorm your ideas before writing a persuasive letter to your parents. Remember, persuasive writing is done to try to convince someone to do or believe something. State your thesis (what you want your parents to do about the honeybees), and choose three good reasons to support your thesis (why they should do what yougraphicorganizers are asking). Use facts or examples from your research to support each of your three reasons to do what you are asking. You want to prove to your parents that your request is the best way to solve this problem. The more facts you use to justify your request, the stronger your argument will be. Good Luck, Ms. Rivera

12 Intro. Problem Task The Buzz Topics Honeybee Hive Pollination Presentation Letter Rubric Conclusion DICTIONARY Go Back Go Forward By completing this WebQuest you will hopefully begin to think about honeybees in a different way. Many people fear honeybees and consider them to be pests. However, they are just the opposite! Honeybees can be dangerous, but they are also extremely beneficial to plants, other animals, and people. Without honeybees the world would be a very different place. For a small creature, they truly are amazing! Unfortunately, our honeybees are in trouble! Something is happening to the honeybees in our nation and they are dying rapidly. If you are interested in learning more about this or other topics related to honeybees such as beekeeping, honey, or pollination, you can revisit the sites in the WebQuest and check out the following websites.
