Skeletal System Structure of the skeletal system – fact 206 Total Bones
2
Did you know???? 1.You have 206 total bones in your body. 2. 14 bones are in your face. 3. 8 bones are in each wrist. 4. 23 bones are in each foot including the ankle 5. Your bones consist of 50% water and 50% solid matter.
3
Function of the skeletal system (write these in your foldable overview page) 1.Protection: protects the brain and internal organs 2.Support: maintains upright posture 3.Blood cell formation: Blood cells are made inside bones. 4.Storage: stores fat and minerals. 5.Leverage: The levers are mainly the long bones of the body and the axes (fulcrum) are the joints where the bones meet

Label your skeleton with the diagram on the next page!
7
Types Of Joints A joint, or articulation, is a union of two or more bones PivotHinge Ball & SocketGliding Top of the neck Shoulder/Hip Elbow/Knee Intercarpal joints

Types Of Joints A joint is Type of joint: Location: Type of joint:
9
Lets Review Stand up and show 3 people in the room a pivot joint, a hinge joint, ball in socket joint and a gliding joint.

Types of Bones Long BoneShort Bone Flat BoneIrregular Bone Head – Body - HeadAs wide as they are long Provides Protection bones which do not fall into any other category

Joints are classified as 1.Movable joints – –Elbow, ankle, ribs, wrist, shoulder, hip 2. Immoveable joints - –Portions of the skull,
13
Bones are connected by 1.Cartilage 2.Ligaments 3.Tendons
14
Cartilage Allows joints to move easily, cushions bones, and supports soft tissue
15
Ligament – Hold bones in place at the joints
16
Tendon – Joins muscle to muscle or muscle to bone
17
Types of Fractures
18
Open Fracture a fracture that protrudes to the exterior of the body.
19
Closed Fracture A Fracture that does not break the skin
20
Greenstick Fracture Only one side of the bone is broken, mostly seen in children
21
Transverse Fracture Break at a right angle and caused by direct traumatic injury
22
Spiral Fracture Bone broke because of a twisting type motion.
23
Skeletal System Information Appendicular System 126 bones Axial System 80 bones
24
Conditions of the Skeletal System Osteoporosis Bones become fragile and more likely to break Osteoarthritis Joint disorder where the cartilage is wearing away
