1 U.S. Capitol car chase

2 A woman, identified as 34-year-old Miriam Carey, was shot dead Thursday. The drama began around 2 p.m. yesterday when the woman steered her car near the White House. She drove up to a barrier at a checkpoint and was approached by Secret Service officers. She hurriedly tried to drive away, struck the barrier and backed into an officer. Police said the car sped down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the Capitol, where security vehicles stopped it. She slammed into reverse crashing into a cruiser. At that point officers began firing. She then careened around a nearby traffic circle with a police car in close pursuit and then headed away. The car crashed into more security barriers a few blocks later. More shots were fired after the vehicle stopped, and the woman was hit several times. Carey was later pronounced dead. Two officers were injured. Inside the car was a 1-year-old child, who was not harmed. Officers didn't know there was a child inside the woman's car during the chase. Nervousness reverberated throughout a U.S. Capital already shaken by the recent mass shooting at the Navy Yard as well as a controversial government shutdown. Authorities lauded the action of police -- some of whom aren't being paid -- who responded to the incident. Because of the government shutdown, U.S. Capitol Police aren't receiving a paycheck. Why the woman with a young child tried to drive into a blocked entrance near the White House still remains a question.

Brad Arkin, Adobe's chief security officer, wrote in a blog post that the hackers had removed data including encrypted credit- and debit-card numbers, but that the company does not believe any decrypted numbers were taken. The attackers "removed from our systems certain information relating to 2.9 million Adobe customers, including customer names, encrypted credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates, and other information relating to customer orders," Arkin wrote. The company is in the process of notifying customers whose card information was involved in the incident, and is resetting the relevant customer passwords.
