1 3 February 2005, J. Lettry 1 Task #3 100 kW direct targets “Development of targets and ion sources for radionuclide production that can accommodate up to 100 kW power from a beam of protons or light ions” Baseline 2005: 1 GeV proton driver, revision of the baseline end 2006

2 3 February 2005, J. Lettry 2 Strategy: 4 test cases Targets –Actinide target (carbide) UC 2 +C, ThC 2 +C W-converter, Moderator & Reflector –Metal foil target (solid) Ta, Nb –Oxide powder of fiber BeO + converter Insulating materials low dE/dx Low density –Molten metal (Liquid) Vapor condensation Ion-sources –Mono ECR –RILIS (Hg) –FEBIAD Deliverable: Engineering design of 100 kW targets Engineering design of 100 kW targets

3 3 February 2005, J. Lettry 3 Task #3, plan 2005 CERN –Basic geometry and energy deposition of the test cases TC-1 (Carbide) and TC-2 (metal foils) –Test of a UC-Converter prototype as a Bench mark for neutronics + fission simulation (overview of existing data) –List of material for neutronics codes calibration –Characterization of the ECR noble gas ion-source. –Design and test of an Alkali suppression system for RILIS PSI & CERN –Design of the probe irradiation support –Definition of the procedure for pre- and post-irradiation characterization / analysis PSI –Nuclear calculation for the design given by CERN in view of energy deposition, activation and dose rates. –Define the necessary modifications of the infrastructure to allow the irradiation –PSI will establish a safety report (March 06) and handling procedures for the experiments and start licensing activities. UCL –Literature study of the 6He and 18Ne production mechanism (including other primary beams such as 30-100 MeV light nuclei). CEA & CERN –RILIS ionization scheme of Hg. Univ. Munchen & CERN –Estimation of the total ion-current and atomic flow through the ion-source outlet. –Ion-source optics: Emittance measurements and selection of the beam optics simulation codes.
