4 INTRODUCTION This presentation summarises the requirements that need to be covered in order to have an IPT installation running for Node Managers to evaluate the costs and implications of the uptake of the IPT. The GBIF Secretariat, Denmark This lecture is presented by Kyle Braak, developer at the GBIF Secretariat in Copenhagen, Denmark. An alternative options for those that cannot maintain local servers are hosted environments, that allow a quick implementation of the tool without initial high investments. The GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit

5 HARDWARE REQ The GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit The hardware requirements are related to the amount of data that is expected to be published in the server and the number of IPT instances to install on it. Processor: 2.0+ Ghz Memory: 2+ Gb RAM HDD: 1 Gb free space Permanent wired connection to the internet (24h/7d) Any server from 2007 or newer with enough memory should run the application smoothly.

6 SOFTWARE REQ The GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit The IPT can work in the most spread Operating systems: MS Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Sun. Required applications: Java Runtime Environment 1.5+ Java server (Apache Tomcat, Jetty, Jboss, Weblogic, Glassfish). Geoserver 1.7.4+

7 HOSTED ENVIRONMENTS The GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit Commercial services that offer server space that suit the customer needs (lately known as ‘cloud computing’) Allows a fast launch of the project; Does not require a big initial investment; Reduces the personnel needed for set up and maintenance; Makes receiving remote helpdesk easier; Easy server upgrade. And the following drawbacks: Ties the publication to a commercial service with a periodic fee; Requires good internet connectivity with the server; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae_DKNwK_ms
