AIM: How do circulatory system diseases affect bodily homeostasis? DO NOW 1.Why is it so important to try to keep the heart and circulatory system healthy? 2.What problems can people have? 3.What can you do to maintain good cardiovascular health?
2
Circulatory System Diseases Also called Cardiovascular Diseases https://www.brainpop.com/health/nutrition/f ats/ https://www.brainpop.com/health/nutrition/f ats/ “One should eat to live, not live to eat.” –Cicero, Roman statesman
3
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) Most common form of cardiovascular disease Causes: Stress, diet, heredity, cigarette smoking, aging Effects: – Artery lining gets damaged – Heart muscle gets weakened
4
High Blood Pressure Can Lead To: strokes, vision problems or blindness, heart failure or attacks, kidney failure, artery problems Symptoms: usually no symptoms “silent”

8
Stroke “Brain Attack” Cause: Blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off Effects: Brain cells deprived of oxygen Brain cells begin to die * Can lead to paralysis
9
Stroke Symptoms:
10
Coronary Thrombosis (Heart Attack) Cause: blockage in one artery that carries blood to heart muscle Why the Blockage? cholesterol & fat in artery walls Effects: – Blood flow to the heart is blocked – Heart muscle becomes damaged http://bcove.me/8amj5abh

Heart Attack Symptoms: (can vary) chest pain or discomfort, upper body discomfort, shortness of breath – different for males & females
13
Leukemia A form of cancer (cancer of blood cells) Causes: scientists don’t understand the exact causes, although genetics & the environment plays a role Effects: – Bone marrow makes too many white blood cells – developing red blood cells and platelets are “crowded out”
14
Leukemia Symptoms: swollen lymph nodes in neck & armpits, unintentional weight loss, constant fatigue & weakness, “night sweats”, frequent infections
15

16
Anemia Causes: multiple include vitamin & iron deficiencies Effects: – The blood does not have enough hemoglobin or red blood cells – body cells do not receive enough oxygen Symptoms: fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, pale skin, dizziness
17
Visual
18
Sickle-Cell Anemia Cause: genetics (inherited) Effects: – hemoglobin protein is abnormal & RBC’s have a sickle-shape – RBC’s can get stuck in blood vessels, due to abnormal shape – tissues & organs are deprived of oxygen-rich blood organ damage

Group-Work In pairs, work on handout (regents question)
22
Individual Work On looseleaf, answer the following question: Q: Is there anyone in your family, or outside of your family that has a circulatory system disease? If so, who? Which disease? In addition, explain what this person has experienced. Note: If you do not know anyone, answer the lesson’s AIM.

Homework Read textbook pg. 589 Write a paragraph explaining what your day- to-day diet consists of & state whether or not you think what you are eating daily is good or bad for you & explain why.
