 Check our homework!  Using Functions to perform calculations  Worksheet! Practice….Practice…Practice…

What value would be calculated by Excel for each of the following formulas if cell C15 stores a value of 16 and cell D8 a value of 4?  =C15*D8  =C15+5+D8  =C15*5+D8  =C15*(5+D8)  =C15/D8 What value would be calculated by Excel for each of the followig formulas?  =2+7*5+4  =(2+7)*(5+4)  =5+10/5  =(5+10)/5 = 16 * 4 = 16 + 5 + 4 = 16 * 5 +4 = 16 * (5 + 4) = 16/4 Answers:

 Excel includes built-in functions that can be included in a formula.  A function performs a task that results in a single value.  The arguments of a function are enclosed in parentheses after the function name and are usually cell references.  Example: Adding the values stored in cells A1, B5, and E7 a formula as the following can be used: SUM(A1, B5, E7) Function Arguments

 Use the SUM formula again!  To add A1, A2, A3…..A10, try: SUM (A1:A10) Remember: Functions are useful because they often make a formula shorter and are less error-prone, especially when a large range of cells is involved.

 The AVERAGE function adds the values of the cells in the range and then divides the result by the number of cells in the range.  Example:  The formula: =AVERAGE (C12:C17) sums the values in cells C12, C13, C14, C15, C16, C17 and then divides the total by 6.

 Spreadsheet formulas are siplayed at their cell locations by pressing Ctrl + ` (the accent mark) The accent mark is located above the tab key! To get back to the normal screen press Ctrl + ` (the accent mark) AGAIN!

 Format the values as currency with 2 decimal points.  Highlight cells B3 to B10.  Select format cells.  Select currency. Type 2 in the decimal places entry box. Click OK.  Use a function to sum the values.  Select cell B11 and enter the formula: =SUM(B3:B10)  What is your sum?  Enter the formula to Average the values.  Select cell B12 and enter the formula: = AVERAGE(B3:B10)  Create a header with your name and today’s date.  Right align your name  Center the date  Save and print your worksheet.  Print a worksheet with your formulas and a worksheet in normal view.  Turn in for Credit.
