Do Now…. When do you use energy? List all of the ways you have used energy today.
3
Do Now…. 1) What is the difference between ATP and ADP? What role do both play? 2) What are the overall products of photosynthesis? 3) What makes plants green?
4
Do Now…. 1) Where does photosynthesis occur? 2) Write the chemical equation for photosynthesis? 3) What is the electron transport chain?
6
Without the ability to obtain and use energy, life would not exist.
7
Forms of Energy Energy comes in many forms: Light Heat Electricity ... Energy can also be stored in the bonds of chemical compounds.
8
Chemical Energy The main compound cells use to store and release energy = ATP
9
Cell Energy Compounds:
10
The two cell energy processes we will discuss = Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration

CHAPTER 8
13
Why do leaves change colors in the fall?
14
Definition: The conversion of light energy into chemical energy stored in organic compounds Who can do this? …Plants and Algae
15
In other words, remember this: carbon dioxide + water + light energy = glucose + oxygen As a chemical reaction it's like so: 6CO 2 +6H 2 O C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2
16
Where does it happen? Within the CHLOROPLAST of a plant cell Draw & label in notes!
19
A. Light Reactions Reaction occurs in the membrane of the thylakoid Chloroplast Circle on the diagram you drew.
20
1. Photosynthesis begins with the absorption of light by pigments in the thylakoids and the splitting of water Main pigments in plants = chlorophyll. It absorbs all colors of light, and reflects back green.
22
A. Light Reactions-con’t 2. Light excites e- that were released from water and are in the chlorophyll pigments (e- go from low energy to high energy) 3. e- travel to other molecules in membrane, losing energy along the way
24
Final Step: 4. e- combine with H+ to make NADPH and … ATP ADP + phosphate + energy ATP NADPH and ATP will act as energy to fuel the Calvin Cycle………..
26
1. Occurs in stroma of chloroplast (circle on your diagram) 2. Uses ATP and H from light rxn. 3. ATP + H + CO 2 (from air) = glucose (carb)
27
C h l o r o p l a s t Solution- STROMA THYLAKOID
28
The exchange of gases between the leaf and the atmosphere occurs through the STOMATA (pores on the underside of a leaf)
