1 The Historical Metallurgy Society Brief presentation to the Local Society Forum of the IOM3 28 March 2012

2 What is HMS? The Historical Metallurgy Society The Historical Metallurgy Society provides an international forum for the exchange of information and research in historical metallurgy. Our members interests cover a wide range of disciplines concerning the historical and archaeological investigation of metals and metalworking. HMS promotes the subject and may be consulted when issues of research, preservation and recording arise.

3 HMS – A Brief History HMS celebrates its 50th anniversary next year and to celebrate will host a major international conference in London in June 2013. It was formed by a group of metallurgists, engineers and chemists - mainly members of the Iron & Steel Institute - who saw a need to record the rapidly vanishing traditional technologies and to preserve some of the sites and artefacts which were being lost. It now attracts Historians and Archaeologists as well as Materials Scientists.
