2. Wh at is a network? A network is a group of computers that are connected to each other by various means, so that they may communicate with each other. The internet is the largest network in the world.

3. Client/Server Networks A network can be categorized into 3 categories based on its structure. Client/server network is one of them.

4. Types of client/server networks There are 6 types of this network. These are Local Area Network(Lan) Wide area network(Wan) Metropolitan area network(Man) Personal area network(Pan) Global area network(Gan) Home Area Network(Han)

5. Local Area Network Local Area Network refers to a particular region interconnected by multiple computers into computer groups. This network serves a home, building or campus.

6. Characteristics of lan Few kilometers coverage area. 100 or 1000 mbps data transmission rate. Better communication quality. Transmission error rate low. Low cost. Simple maintenance.

7. Wide Area Network It is a collection of different local area networks. They are connected using bridges, routers or gateways.

8. Characteristics of wan Covers great distances. Data transfer rate lower than lan. Maintenance cost is higher.

9. Metropolitan area network This network connects local area networks in a metropolitan area such as city or town and handles bulk of communication activity across the region.

10. Characteristics of man It covers area larger than lan but smaller than wan. Network distance of 5 to 50 km. Fiber-optic cable. Installation cost greater than lan.

11. Personal Area Network This is computer network organized around an individual within a single building. It includes computers, mobile, mp3, gaming console and other entertainment devices.

12. Characteristics of pan Covers small area within a building or an apartment. Easy installation. Very low maintenance cost. High speed data transmission.

13. Global Area Network A global area network (GAN) refers to a network composed of different interconnected networks that covers an unlimited geographical area.

14. Characteristics of gan Covers larger distance than lan,wan,man. Installation process complicated. High maintenance cost. Global satellite network is used as transmission medium.

15. Home Area Network A home network or home area network (HAN) is a type of local area network with the purpose to facilitate communication among digital devices present inside or within the close vicinity of a home.

16. Why should we use these networks? Resource sharing. Easier backup. Personal communication. Flexible access. Workgroup computing. Performance enhancement and balancing. Entertainment.
