Two Levels of English Proficiency BICS Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills CALP Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency

BICS: Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills Conversational “Playground language” Informal Simple grammar and vocabulary Acquired in 1-2 years

CALP: Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency School language, textbook language Formal Complex grammar and vocabulary Acquired in 4-7 years

Who Receives English Services? Children are identified Home Language Questionnaire and Parent Interview NYSITELL – New York State Identification Test for ELL’s NYSESLAT – New York State ESL Achievement Test (Scores from previous year)

What Determines the Need for English Services? Scores on NYSITELL or NYSESLAT tests Listening Speaking Reading Writing

When Do Children Go to English? 5 days a week from 35 minutes a day to 72 minutes a day based on student’s language level *Students attend all special classes such as Art, Music, Physical Education, Library, etc.

Where Do the Children Attend English Classes? In English classrooms in small groups and Sometimes in their own classrooms

What Do We Teach? Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking Language Arts & Communication; Math & Problem Solving; Science & Health; Social Studies & History; Multicultural awareness *We use Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS)

How Do We Teach English? We use: Books (literature, poetry, fiction and non- fiction, workbooks, textbooks, dictionaries, atlases) Technology (SmartBoards, iPads, computers) Science Experiments Language and Math Activities Maps, Globes & Charts Drama, Music, Dance & Movement Arts & Crafts
