1 The Elements And Principles Of Design
A presentation by Sabyth Fay

2 Elements of Design Line Shape
Form Color Value Texture Space Elements are design tools used to create a piece of art

3 Line Objects, values, or other elements arranged in a path. The eye follows strong lines. Lines are used to create focus and movement in art. This picture represents line because the path guides your eyes from the foreground to the background of the picture.

4 Shape An area set apart from surrounding areas by a line, or difference in color, value, or other elements. Shapes are 2-Dimentional. This pictures shows shape because the house stands out from the trees and grass. The house is geometric where as the trees are randomly shaped, so they are organic.

5 Form The 3D aspects of object, such as volume and mass. Sculpture and architecture have form. Form in a painting or photo is an illusion created with techniques such as shading and perspective. This photograph shows form because it is 3D; it can be felt and seen from all sides and it has mass.

6 Color Two major properties are hue and value. Hue is the name of color (ex. Red) Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. There are many important aspects of color. This picture shows color because it has all colors of the color wheel named and grouped in the right places. Go here for the full version of the color wheel:

7 Value The lightness and darkness in a design. Changes in value, such as highlights and shadows, make objects appear 3D. Value contrast can be used to focus attention to part of a design This picture shows value because the lightness of the door and window and the light on the floor guide your eyes to that side of the photo.

8 Texture The roughness or smoothness of a surface.
The look of the wolf makes us think that it is soft, whereas the three bark is rough and scratchy; two textures shown in this photograph.

9 Space The width, height, and depth of an artwork. Sculpture and architecture exist in space. Space in a painting or photo is an illusion created with techniques such as perspective, overlapping, and size change. This picture shows space because the objects in the foreground are more detailed that in the back, and the further back you go, the lighter the area is.

10 Principles of Design Balance Movement Rhythm Contrast
Emphasis Pattern Unity How the elements are used to make art.

11 Balance The distribution of visual weight in a work of art.
This picture shows balance because the two objects balance each other in visual weight, and are also balancing each other within the photo.

12 Movement When the eyes follow a path in a design. The line can be created by a line, color, value, or any other element. Movement can be used to direct the viewer’s gaze around a design, usually to emphasize a focal point. The path under the roof and the path outside cause movement and make the viewer’s eyes flow around the painting.

13 Rhythm The repetition of an element that is spaced at intervals throughout the design. This shows pattern from the repeated M&M’s.

14 Contrast Differences between elements that are being compared. Values may be light vs. dark. Shapes may be organic vs. geometric. Textures may be rough vs. smooth. This picture shows contrast because the light flowers stand out against the dark leaves and red trim.

15 Emphasis Using the elements to call attention to important areas of a design. A few techniques used to create emphasis are focal area, isolation, and depth of field. Emphasis is called to the wolf in this picture because it is isolated in the snow and contrasts.

16 Pattern When the elements are arranged in planned or random repetitions. This picture shows pattern because very like shapes are together in random repetitions.

17 Unity When all of the elements in a design work together harmoniously. Some techniques used to create unity are dominant color, overall surface treatments, repeated shapes, and clustering. This picture conveys unity because it is almost the same color all around, and the turn of it makes it come together perfectly.
