1 Effective Use of Small Group Time

2 Traditional Small Group Children sit around a table or in a small circle and work on memorizing the Truths, filling in the workbook section, and reciting the Truths to the small group leader. –Begin with a time of prayer and word of encouragement to work diligently. –Have children come to small group leader to recite. –Small group leader should keep good attendance and award records Frequency of attendance Length of time on the same unit/award

3 Discussion Group Can be done in small or large group setting. –Great for Children’s Church, bus/outreach programs, younger children, children who struggle to read, children who have no help at home, or situations where you know the child will not study or advance without help or encouragement. –Group reads and studies together Memorize It! Commentary and Random components Look up passages and discuss/fill in the blanks Discuss Brain and Heart Questions If time, discuss Bonus Questions

4 Don’t be afraid Use multiple methods within your ministry. –4 th -6 th grade church children often excel with the traditional method. –Beginner readers or unchurched children need more help…a Discussion Group often works well with these children.

5 Tips! Keep good records for attendance and awards! –This will help you minister more effectively. Keep the same small groups every week! –Helps the worker know the learning needs of the child. Encourage the children in your small group by sending postcards! Pay attention to the last time the child earned an award! –Has it been awhile – this child needs help. Does the child need help or encouragement? Help the child get through an award (even if it takes more helps ) This will keep the child from getting discouraged.

9 Ways to encourage responsibility Use bonus patch for attendance and responsibility Candy or Gum each week they bring club supplies Encourage the use of Bible Covers or Cinch Bags Host a club-wide responsibility contest if entire club brings all supplies a certain percentage of the time – Don’t require perfection! This will discourage those that did right.
