Four-Town Walking Competition SPONSORED BY: CENTRAL CONNECTICUT HEALTH DISTRICT WITH SUPPORT FROM: ANTHEM BLUE CROSS/BLUE SHIELD, HARTFORD HEALTHCARE & THE TOWNS OF BERLIN, NEWINGTON, ROCKY HILL, AND WETHERSFIELD

Who We Are We are the local health department that covers Berlin, Newington, Rocky Hill and Wethersfield, serving approximately 97,000 We provide public health services to our residents We work to PREVENT people from getting sick

What We Do 1. Inspections / Review Restaurants, Salons, Hotels, Motels, Daycares, Public Pools, Septic Systems, Wells, Farmer’s Markets, Various Complaints (Housing/Environmental), Lead Complaints 2. Emergency Preparedness Provide flu & pneumonia vaccines every fall; disaster planning 3. Community Health Putting on AIRS program, Bike Helmets, Senior Dental Program, etc.

History of Walking Competition 2013: Berlin successfully hosted a walking competition for their employees and an article covering the activities got published in a local newspaper 2014: Rocky Hill was aware of the competition and challenged Berlin to their own competition 2015: CCHD decided to bring together their four communities for a four-town employee walking challenge 2016: CCHD ACHIEVE Health decided to expand to employees and residents of all four towns

Who? ALL residents of the four towns are eligible (and by extension, those who work in one of those towns) Teams are allowed! Give team name to town contact person by May 23 rd Registration is mandatory to participate

What? Walking, hiking, jogging/running - any activity trackable on your device of choice Other activities – 30 minutes/day

Where? Anywhere! You don’t have to exercise in one of our towns, but there are lots of opportunities in them!

When? Four weeks: Tracking begins June 1–June 29 Other important dates: Team names to Town Contact people by May 23 rd. Registration begins May 26, 2016 on Walking Works website (WalkingWorks.com). Participants must enter steps daily or weekly by COB Wednesdays during the competition. ( June 8, 15, 22, 29 ) July 7 th – Closing/Awards Ceremony at Rocky Hill Summer Concert Series (6:30 concert begins) Rain Date: July 12

Why? Health (mental & physical) Fun Camaraderie Friendly competition (Berlin won the municipal employee competition last year. Just sayin’.)

How? Find a way to track your steps (pedometer, tracking app, or other tracking device) 125 pedometers per town - first come, first served Available tonight or from your town’s “point person” Starting on May 26, 2016, register on Anthem’s Walking Works website (www.walkingworks.com ) or WalkingWorks mobile appwww.walkingworks.com

Instructions for WalkingWorks website EVERY participant must register for steps to count for the town total. 1. Go to WalkingWorks.com or use Mobile App 2.Click on Register Now 3.Complete the required information boxes a.Last name b.First name c.Password {must be at least 8 characters long, include one upper case character, one lower case character, one number and one special character (for example: !, % @)} d.Confirm password (Make sure you record your password somewhere!) e.Email f.Zip Code 4.IMPORTANT: ALL participants need to click on button “I am participating with my company” even if you are participating as an individual.

5. Under “Plan”, click on the arrow at the right side of the box. a.Scroll down to Connecticut, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield b.Hit Enter 6. Under “Group”, click on the arrow at the right side of the box, and select “CCHD Step into Summer Competition”. 7. Under “Program” a.Click on the arrow at the right side of the box. If you are participating as an individual, select your town – individual users i.It will look like this using Rocky Hill as an example: Town of Rocky Hill- INDIVIDUAL USERS b. If you are participating on a team, select your town i.Then, under “Team”, your Team name should be listed. Scroll through the names and click on your team name. If your team name was not reported by May 23 rd to your town contact person, please sign up as an individual user.
