General Touch all papers Friday Start with high scores When it gets difficult, switch to low scores Most time is spent in the middle
7
Process Click paper links Announce submission number, title, authors, institutions Ask immediately and loudly: “Any conflicts?” Wait for conflicts (incl SVs) to leave, then click “show more…” 1AC quickly summarizes (60 seconds max) – Paper or note – Contributions – General state of reviews/rebuttal If 2AC has anything else to add, 2AC states his/her perspective (also 60 seconds max) If very-high-scoring paper with no 2AC review or 1AC and 2AC agree – Ask about BP/PBP/HM, check appropriate combo – Then move on… – ACs always can ask questions, but keep things moving – Other ACs shouldn’t really be getting hung up on accepted papers If 1AC and 2AC disagree, discussion ensues (more later)… If accepted and appropriate, ask about BP, check appropriate box Enter ‘A’, ‘R’, or ‘T’ (table) into PCS
8
Process Prolonged discussion: table it (‘T’) and assign a 3AC – Revisit later in the day or Saturday High-ranking rejects need a clear justification, often a 3AC – If 1AC pink, think – If 2AC pink, think hard – If 2AC is the primary basis for rejection, SCs will let us know Resurrection – A rejected paper can be brought back – ACs should leave a paper number with you on a post-it to revisit discussion
9
SCs’ Role Keep discussion moving Maintain focus on contribution Maintain positive vibe – …but moderate ACs who love everything Watch pace Watch anonymity
10
Ethics In general, we trust the ethical review of our authors’ organizations – If an IRB review is indicated, it’s almost never our place to second-guess Content at CHI is under the purview of the ACM Code of Ethics – In some cases, where no IRB review is indicated, it may be appropriate to discuss ethics In case of doubt, run it through tpc@chi2016.acm.org
11
Papers vs Notes
12
Conditional Acceptance All papers are technically conditional accepts AC clearly identifies required changes at the top of the meta-review AC verifies required changes before camera-ready Shepherded papers – Detailed comments needed in meta review – SC enters “shepherd” in “notes” field, privately records shepherd – Shepherd becomes 1AC prior to leaving meeting, previous AC becomes 2AC – Shepherd emails authors right after reviews are released, anonymity optional
13
By Saturday Afternoon All papers marked ‘A’ or ‘R’ in PCS Collect cover sheets for all accepts – Passed to SC after discussion – Insertion sort as you go – Mark as “P” or “N” in top-right corner – Quickly verify all are there @ end of meeting To print cover sheets (or anything), mail svchair@chi2016.acm.org
14
CHI B EST P APER C OMMITTEE Tomorrow morning, before discussions begin, find a member of your subcommittee to be on the Best Papers Committee. Conflicts don’t matter. Each member of the BPC will read and rank 5-10 papers. No review or any other kind of writing is required. Please send your nomination to awards@chi2016.acm.org.awards@chi2016.acm.org
15
CHI B EST P APER A WARDS CHI has two types of paper awards: 1 Honorable Mention Up to 5% of submitted papers 2 Best Papers Up to 1% of submitted papers
16
CHI P APER A WARD P ROCESS Your job is to categorize award papers into three categories: 1 Best Paper Recipients Depending on the size of your split, you will select either 1 or 2 (see table) papers for a Best Paper Award. 2 Possible Best Papers Depending on the size of your split, you will select either 1 or 2 (see table) papers for a Best Paper Nomination. These papers will be sent to a BP committee & will either receive Honorable Mentions or Best Paper Awards. 3 Honorable Mention Recipients Select 4-10 (see table) papers that will receive an Honorable Mention. These papers will not be considered by the BP committee for a Best Paper Award.
17
CHI P APER A WARD P ROCESS Mark papers as “PBP” or “HM” as you go, as per above, using the “Best Paper” field in PC. This is just a “note to self” at this point. When decisions are done – Ask ACs for additional nominations on post-its – Sort by this field, then by score – Refine to your targets (see below)
18
Your committee’s allocation of papers is based on the number of submissions to your subcommittee. See also: Best Papers Process PDF sent to all SCs.
