1
A Wave is A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place
2
What are Waves?? medium -they are created when a source of energy travels through a material or a medium and cause it to vibrate
3
Materials that can act as a medium are Medium comes between a substance through which actions are conveyed to the senses or a force acts on object
4
Waves that require a medium Are Mechanical Waves Medium does not move but the wave moves through it. DON’T WRITE THIS PART Watch this person – he does not move in the direction of the wave
5
Medium
6
Electromagnetic waves (like light) do not need a medium And can travel through a vacuum like space
7
Vacuum A space totally devoid (having none) of all matter
8
Mechanical and Sound waves cannot travel through space because they need a medium They need an source of energy to cause medium to Vibrate
9
Transverse Waves Waves that travel through a medium at a right angle to the direction in which they travel ARE ….. Waves are classified by the how they move
10
As a transverse wave moves in one direction, the particles of the medium move across (perpendicular to) the direction of the wave The highest point of a transverse wave are called The lowest point of a transverse wave are called Crests Troughs
11
It is a Longitudinal Wave When particles move parallel to the direction that the waves are traveling Compression Compression – Is the area of sound where the molecules are “presses” together. Rarefaction Is the gap between the compressions of a sound wave
12
Combinations of Transverse and Longitudinal waves They occur at the surface between two mediums
13
surface waves are a combination of transverse and longitudinal motions together they produce circular motions Aweso me surfing video: https:// www.yo utube.c om/wat ch?v=N QZJ0zb ouIg https:// www.yo utube.c om/wat ch?v=N QZJ0zb ouIg
