Can you suggest ways people use sound to help us do things? © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Energy Noise Something you can or can’t see? Something you hear with your ears Vibrations Music © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Sound is made up of waves like this These waves are actually made by vibrations moving through air or water. © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Place your hands in front of your face with your palms together like this. Slide your hands towards your face and cup them over your nose and mouth, closing the gap. Close your eyes and make a deep ‘aaaaaah’ sound. What did you feel? © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Vibrations are waves of energy that make an object move very quickly, usually with small movements. © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Get a rubber band and stretch it across your fingers from your thumb to your smallest finger. Pluck the band and watch the tiny movements. What are these called? © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Sounds are made when objects vibrate and the energy created moves. What are some objects you can think of that can be made to vibrate? © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Vibrations travel through the air from where they were made to your outer ear. Your pinna directs the sound waves into your ear canal. © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Vibrations make different sounds depending on the type and shape of sound wave made. Here are some examples of different shaped sound waves © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

These are; Wavelength, Amplitude, Frequency © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Wavelength – the distance from the top of one wave to the top of the next wavelength © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Amplitude – how tall the wave is from the point where there is silence amplitude © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

Frequency – how many waves are made each second. frequency 1 second © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach

I’m a grasshopper. I can rub my wings together so fast they vibrate and you can hear me on a warm summer night. © Jenni Bennett 2015 Science to Teach
