Aims & objectives This unit aims to: provide a definition of the Open Educational Resources (OER) concept present a number of learning portals that provide access to OER guide the participants in searching and retrieving the appropriate OERs that will support their training scenarios Module C533, Unit C533.3

1.iii. Learning outcomes & skills By the end of the component, the students are expected to: understand the concept, the role and importance of OERs get familiar with a number of learning portals that provide access to the OERs have the competence to search for and retrieve OERs for supporting their training scenarios collect a sufficient number of digital resources for supporting their scenarios Module C533, Unit C533.3

1.iv. Methodology & media The Unit is composed of: (a) Lecture (b) Hands-on exercise (b) Group interaction and discussion The Unit consists of: 1.1 Definition of Open Educational Resources (OERs) 1.2 Learning portals providing access to OERs 1.3 Finding the appropriate OERs for supporting the training scenarios Module C533, Unit C533.3

2. Main part Module C533, Unit C533.3

2.i. Glossary OER: Open Educational Resources OA: Organic Agriculture AE: Agroecology Module C533, Unit C533.3

What are the OER? OER = Open Educational Resources Educational materials that are freely available and licensed in a way that gives users the legal permission to reuse – use the work “as-is” without having to ask permission revise - alter or transform the work to meet the user’s needs remix – combine the work with other works for an enhanced effect redistribute – share the work or derivative work with others. Module C533, Unit C533.3

Why use OER?  Shared content becomes a vehicle for collaboration and connection  Shared materials are continually improved upon through revisions  Materials can be adapted and localized to fit the specific audience needs  Saves time, cuts costs, and reduces duplication of effort Module C533, Unit C533.3

How to find OER? OER is supported by an ever-growing active movement Usually available through specialized learning portals We need to focus on OER in the area of agriculture! Module C533, Unit C533.3

Let’s see some examples: Module C533, Unit C533.2

Wow, that was fast… Let’s see them one by one! Module C533, Unit C533.3

1.OER Commons www.oercommons.org Provides access to a number of OER on agriculture Provides a number of search options and filtering of the results Green OER (www.oercommons.org/green) hosts resources specifically on green topicswww.oercommons.org/green Module C533, Unit C533.3

2. Organic.Edunet Web portal www.organic-edunet.eu www.organic-edunet.eu Provides access to a wealth of resources on OA and AE Features four different search mechanisms and filtering of the results Not all resources are OER, so one should be careful! Module C533, Unit C533.3

3. MERLOT www.merlot.org Provides access to a number of resources on agriculture and green topics Features classification of resources by type as well Users may comment and review resources Module C533, Unit C533.3

3. OER Africa – Agriculture OER www.oerafrica.org/agricultureoer Provides access to a number of resources on agricultural topics The number of resources is constantly growing Resources are mostly relevant to African agricultural sector Module C533, Unit C533.3

4. FAO Organic Agriculture portal http://www.fao.org/organicag/en Provides access to publications, reports, projects, glossary etc. on organic agriculture topics The number of resources is relatively high and growing Resources are classified according to their top-level topic and are easy to find Module C533, Unit C533.3

5. FAO Corporate Document Repository http://www.fao.org/documents/en Provides access to a wealth of information of various formats Resources are not restricted to OA, but they can apply in most cases Features a classification system and a powerful search engine for retrieving resources. Module C533, Unit C533.3

3. Conclusions Module C533, Unit C533.2

3.i. Summary OER exhibit advantages over the traditional educational resources. They are free to use, reuse, remix and revise. A number of learning portals provide access to OER on various topics, including agriculture. Module C533, Unit C533.3
