6. Governance  What is governance?  Governance is not government  Its about decision making  Youth are the majority yet they don’t participate/marginalized

8. Urban Governance  The world today needs a new, comprehensive and holistic model of urban governance  Involving all stakeholders as equal partners in development.  Urban governance which integrates all stakeholders including the youth in participatory decision making.

9. Focus Questions  How is our city/towns governed?  What do we assume is the purpose of governance in a city/town to be?  Where should a city’s efforts be directed towards  Does good, urban governance matter?

10. Focus Questions  To whom does the city belong ?  How do city authorities decide which policies to propose or how to distribute resources?  How do citizens hold city leaders accountable  And how effective are these mechanisms of accountability?

Focus Questions  Who controls resources in the city  How have changes in city control affected power dynamics?  Does control over resources bring power?  To what extent have citizens’ power and control changed over time?  To what extent have citizens’ power and control changed over time?  Does the magnitude of citizenry power positively or negatively influence city growth and inequality?

Urbanization Africa  African continent’s population was over 1bn by 2011.  African population youngest in the world  Comprises of top 10 ‘youngest’ countries (Uganda youngest of all)  35 years from now, it is expected to double.  People will be born or live in urban centers already straining under the massive influx.

Urbanization Uganda  Uganda is experiencing rapid urbanization.  low level of urbanization at 18%,  High rate of urban growth estimated at 5.1% per annum  Kampala the capital city is by far the dominant city with a population of 1.5 million  Projected population 68.4 million by 2035  30% will be in urban areas (UBOS 2014).

16. Conclusion  Young population growth reaps positive benefits  Put structures that will cater to the large youth segment  Foster Youth participation in Governance  Develop youth as partners and leaders in development.  Actively seek out youth involvement in governance
