Domestic Policy 1.An area of public policy which concerns laws, government programs, and administrative decisions which are directly related to all issues and activity within the nation's borders. a.Top domestic policy issues include healthcare reform, energy reform, the economy, education, and immigration.

Foreign Policy 1.The nations plan for dealing with other countries is called its foreign policy. 2.The President directs foreign policy, making key decisions in how the US deals with other countries of the world. a.The Department of state assists the president when making foreign policy decisions. Foreign Policy 3.The primary goal of this policy is national security. 4.Other goals of foreign policy are: a.International Trade b.Promoting world peace c.Promoting democracy around the world 5.Most often the president initiates foreign policy responses to world events and works with the Legislative Branch to carry them out.

5 B. Foreign Policy 6.Tools of foreign policy: a.Making treaties (agreements between two or more countries). All treaties must be approved by 2/3rds of the Senate. 1)Treaties can be used for protection, to settle disputes (peace agreements), or can be trade agreements (like NAFTA) b.The president can also make an executive agreement to bypass the Senate’s approval of a treaty. c.An ambassador is a representative of the US to a specific country or international organization. 1)Ambassadors are appointed by the President and approved by the Senate. 2)Their duties vary, but they must always represent the interests and policies of the US.

7 C. Foreign Aid 1.The US assists foreign countries by providing aid a.Economic aid: money, food, and other supplies b.Military aid: like soldiers helping after a disaster c.Advice: like how to create a democracy. d.The main goal is to create friendships abroad and foster future trading partners.

8 D. International Trade 1.The president can make agreements with other countries about trading products. 2.As the leader the president can also declare trade sanctions or an embargo to punish countries.

Military Force 1.The goal of our military is to prevent war and protect the United States. 2.The President as Commander in Chief may use military force to carry out some foreign policy decisions. This is a powerful tool for the president when dealing with troublesome spots around the globe. 3.The Department of Defense assists the president with military decisions. 4.US Military forces include: a.Army b.Air force c.Navy d.Marines

Upon President Wilson’s request on April 6, 1917, Congress declared War on Germany and gave the President the power to lead the army and navy to fight Germany in World War I. Military In 2003, President George W. Bush decided to focus support on a worldwide initiative to help countries prevent and treat HIV/AIDS. Foreign Aid In 1949, after World War II, the United States and other democratic western countries formed NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It said that if any country was attacked by an outside nation, they would help defend each other. Treaty

Foreign Aid In 1968, the major countries of the world agreed to the “Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” which is aimed at limiting the spread of nuclear weapons. President Wilson wanted the United States to agree to the Treaty of Versailles, the overall peace treaty ending the war in Europe, and to join the League of Nations. The U.S. Senate rejected these actions, so the U.S. did not agree to them. Treaty In June 1950, during the Cold War, communist North Korea invaded South Korea. The United States had been supporting South Korea. As a result of the invasion, President Truman sent U.S. troops as part of a United Nations mission to fight on behalf of South Korea. Military
