4 SOL 3a The student will demonstrate knowledge of citizenship and the rights, duties, and responsibilities of citizens by a) describing the processes by which an individual becomes a citizen of the United States.

5 I. CITIZENSHIP A. Citizenship: “All person’s born or naturalized in the United States are citizens” Pg. 4 CE.3A If you are born in the U.S or any territory of the U.S. or any U.S. vessel. Automatically - NATIVE BORN CITIZEN.

6 Citizenship B. 14 th Amendment: Added to the Constitution after the Civil War, it explains how a person can become a US citizen

7 After the Civil War, southerners were preventing newly freed slaves from accessing the rights they had as citizens. This resulted in creating the 14 th Amendment to make sure that because they were former slaves, this does not prevent them from being citizens of the USA. This amendment sets it up that no matter what, if you are born on American soil or at least one of your parents is an American you have full rights as a Citizen of the United States 14 TH AMENDMENT

8 II. HOW TO BECOME A US CITIZEN A. By Birth: Being born on American soil OR being born to at least one parent that is an American Citizen Immigration Video

9 Parent Rule If one OR both of your parents are U.S. citizens and you are born in another country, you are a citizen by birth.

10 Citizenship B. Naturalization: Process taken by immigrants to become an American citizen by demonstrating: - Knowledge of American history - Knowledge of American government - Ability to read, speak, and write words in English

11 What does immigration mean??? A. Immigration: Moving from one country to another in order to become a citizen of that country.

12 NATURALIZATION PROCESS Naturalization THE LEGAL PROCESS WHERE AN ALIEN MAY BECOME A U.S. CITIZEN

13 Naturalization Process Resident of the U.S. for 5 years OR Resident for 3 years if you married a U.S. citizen

14 Naturalization Rule 2 You must prove you can support yourself = JOB Must be 18 years old

15 Naturalization Rule 3 Prove that you can read, write and speak English

16 Naturalization Rule May not have certain diseases or mental illness No Drug Addicts or Criminals

17 Naturalization Rule Must know US History and government

18 RIGHTS OF NATURALIZED CITIZENS Same rights as native- born U.S. citizens EXCEPTIONS: Cannot become President of Vice-President of the U.S.

19 After you successfully complete the naturalization process you receive a certification and a social security number.

20 III. IMMIGRATION TO AMERICA As a result naturalization and immigration, the United States has become the most diverse society on the planet.

22 “NEW TO AMERICA” BROCHURE You will create a brochure for incoming immigrants that explains the process they have to go through in order to become an American Citizen. Make sure that somewhere on your brochure you also explain the ways that you can become an American citizen. Your brochure must have pictures, words. It must also be detailed, organized, neat, and colorful. Colorful : 5 points Total Points: 25 Neat: 5 points Organized: 5 points Detailed: 5 points (sentences and explanations of process) Pictures: 5 points
