Volcanoes by Marida Torosyan and Ani Tashyan

Volcanoes and Plate Boundaries  There are 600 active volcanoes on land.  One important volcanic belt is the Ring of Fire.  Plates are immense pieces of crust that cause volcanic eruptions.  Volcanoes are made on plate boundaries that also cause volcanic eruptions.

How Volcanoes Form Volcanoes usually form on mid ocean ridges. Along the rift valley lava pours out of cracks. Volcanoes form on spreading boundaries on land.

Shield Volcanoes Usually volcanoes are created on Hawaiian islands and the Medicine Lake. Usually volcanoes are created on Hawaiian islands and the Medicine Lake. Volcanic layers of lava pour out of a vent and harden on top of pervious layers. Volcanic layers of lava pour out of a vent and harden on top of pervious layers.

Cinder Cone Volcanoes Example: Ash, cinders, and bombs combine together and form cinder cones. Example: Ash, cinders, and bombs combine together and form cinder cones. One cinder volcano in Paricutin erupted in 1943. One cinder volcano in Paricutin erupted in 1943.

Composite Volcanoes Composite volcanoes are tall and alternate with layers. Composite volcanoes are tall and alternate with layers. An example of a composite volcano is Mount Fuji in Japan. An example of a composite volcano is Mount Fuji in Japan. Composite volcanoes flow with explosives such as ash, cinders and bombs. Composite volcanoes flow with explosives such as ash, cinders and bombs.

Volcano Vocab. Volcano: A weak hot spot were molten material (magma) comes to the surface. Volcano: A weak hot spot were molten material (magma) comes to the surface. Magma: The molten mixture made out of different types of gases and water. Magma: The molten mixture made out of different types of gases and water. Lava: The magma that comes out of a volcano and hardens. Lava: The magma that comes out of a volcano and hardens.

Hot Spots Hot Spot: An area were materials from deep in the mantle rise and melt Every time that volcanoes form they form on top of hot spots.

Kinds of Eruptions There are quiet eruptions that don’t really explode. There are quiet eruptions that don’t really explode. But many volcanoes can be very explosive and destructive hazards. But many volcanoes can be very explosive and destructive hazards.
