Driving Academic Achievement Through Highly Engaged Students, Parents, and Communities. Classroom Engagement System

Agenda Expectations of stakeholders What is the Classroom Engagement System How the system works How the Trial works Why you should implement CES Expected Outcomes ✓ 66 55 4 4 3 3 2 2 1 1

Your own footer A data-driven process based on Lean Continuous Improvement principles that drives accountability and problem-solving to the students and all stakeholders in the education process An early warning system that provides real-time data to students, parents, and the community and empowers students to take initiative on issues impacting classroom academic performance What is the CES?

A visual communication system that measures and tracks performance against key metrics –Automatically triggers problem- solving when class does not perform to target –Invites parents and community to engage in driving classroom to exceed targets Includes Weekly and Monthly reports for parents and community to track and incentivate classroom performance What is CES (cont…) 60”

Based on Lean Principles. Developed in manufacturing in 1950’s to drive continuous improvement. Currently being implemented in manufacturing and service facilities across the world. Shifts the responsibility of academic success from solely on the teacher to position all stakeholders to play a role. Individual students are accountable to the performance of the entire class. Other stakeholders include parents, businesses, local organizations, teachers, school admin, etc…) Empowers students to take initiative to drive changes that improve the learning process. Students learn leadership processes that they can use to implement changes from the student level in the system Real-time data provides early warning system so that issues can be identified and resolved before they manifest into poor academic performance Helps students develop highly sought after business skills such as problem-solving (Root Cause Analysis), data- driven decision-making, teamwork and team thinking, leadership, and continuous improvement mindset Provides parents and community entities such as local businesses with a clear process for engaging with the classroom to drive academic performance High visibility of data drives accountability so that all stakeholders have an opportunity to respond and initiate problem solving and drive issues to complete resolution Why Should You Implement CES? 11 22 33 44 55 66 77

How the System Works Classroom Performance ParentsCommunityTeachersStudents School Admin

Target/Goal Setting –Students and Teachers set achievement targets for the class Targets are set for key achievement metrics and leading indicators of high performance –Targets are placed on High Visibility Performance boards on wall in classroom How the System Works

Performance Tracking & Reporting –Each week, the classroom performance board is updated with most current data for high visibility Preferably updated by student (will need access to data) –Student enters data from board into spreadsheet that automatically creates report for parents, school admin, and community participants Weekly report goes to parents and school admin Monthly report goes to community participants How the System Works

Issue Recognition and Resolution Failure to reach target will trigger problem-solving process Cross-section of students work together to perform root cause analysis using standard process Students own the follow-up actions from the problem-solving exercise Follow-up items remain on the high-visibility board until they are resolved Teachers and parents are responsible for supporting and holding students accountable for completing follow-up items Classroom Engagement System How the System Works

High Visibility Performance Boards & Reports –Conformance are shown in “green” text –Non-conformances are shown in “red” text Non-conformances require action to drive improvement How the System Works

Expected Outcomes Lean and similar continuous improvement programs have been implemented in factories and service businesses for decades and has had profound results for successful implementations. It is a growing trend and the tools, skill-set, and mindset are in high demand. Students, Teachers, and Admin trained in the CES Processes. Clear processes for parents and community engagement High Visibility to classroom performance

The trial lasts 3 months with on-site support to provide coaching and drive processes. After which, the program should be fully student-driven with minimal support from the teacher You will be provided with high-visibility boards for setting targets and tracking performance We will develop reporting systems that integrate with your existing data management systems We will work to drive community participation in the system by providing a process for engagement and encouraging incentivation for achievement How the Trial Works Classroom Engagement System

Facilitate weekly meetings and generate reports Facilitate problem solving sessions and develop solutions to issues Drive issues to resolution and continuous improvement Students Review weekly reports and participate in problem solving as needed Provide coaching and hold students accountable for following through on commitments Parents Support students in meeting facilitation. Ensure that skills are being developed. Ensure that processes are being executed correctly Coach students and provide direction and resources for solving problems Teachers Review weekly reports and visit classroom periodically to observe learning process Identify opportunities for improvement and drive issues to resolution Provide coaching to teachers & students and share best practices from other classes School Admin Review monthly reports to keep track of how class is progressing Provide incentives for class to exceed achievement targets Community Expectations of Stakeholders Classroom Engagement System

THANK YOU!
