What the Research Says Use low stakes writing assignments- Incorporate writing into shorter, simple tasks of recording the thinking of the student Provide multiple forms of feedback- peer responses, whole class discussions, student self reflection, and brief one on one conferences Incorporate writing for real purposes Use a variety of quality mentor texts as models for desirable “writing moves” Teach transference of skills from one type of writing to another Use rubrics, both simple and complex
