SIMULATION AND MODELING WORKING GROUP REPORT PDS MANAGEMENT MEETING – 2016 FEB 4-5

CHARTER The Simulation and Model working group will investigate approaches for making results and input parameters for simulation and model results available through PDS.

MODEL RESULTS ARE ARCHIVED IN PDS PDS3 Mars GCM archived volume http://pds-atmospheres.nmsu.edu/PDS/data/mogc_0001 Demonstrates that model results can be archived Archived in 1996 Incomplete Provenance (inputs and version of the model not stated in documentation)

EMERGING NEED MAVEN has a model they could archive. RMS Node has expressed a need to archive Saturn Ring model. Modelers with new proposals plan to meet archiving requirements … but need guidance

WHAT IS TO BE ARCHIVED? Provenance Model software and/or a description of the algorithm. Inputs and/or initial conditions for the model. Model results (output)

THINGS THAT WERE CONSIDERED Preservation Levels What to keep and how long. Conclusion Too much overhead in maintaining retention schedules in order to meet records requirements. Keep “forever”

NEXT STEPS Use the IMPEx/SPASE model and map into PDS4. As a test case use: Mars Climate Database at LMD (University Paris 6): http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mcd_python/ MAVEN FISM-M (Multi-spectral Solar EUV model)

DISCUSSION

POLICY ON ACCEPTABLE GENERATED DATA ARCHIVING Generate data is any data which are produced through numerical calculations which are not based on observed data. Generated data may be produced by simulations, models or any other theoretical method. Generated data may be archived in the PDS provided it has demonstrated scientific relevance. The scientific relevance of generated data is established if the data is discussed and referenced as part of a peer reviewed publication. The resolution of the archived data must be commensurate with the resolution used to determine the publishable results. Generated data may be archived prior to the submission of a paper to a peer reviewed journal so that an identifier can be assigned to the data in order to allow the data to be referenced in the paper. Generated data does not need to be reproducible, for example by running the simulation, however the numerical methods used to generate the data must be fully described.
