2 Why? What are your educational objectives? – To teach the topics of Dynamics via real-world modeling and simulation to better prepare students for the future. What problem are you solving? ‒Undergraduate students often lack the ability to apply the topics covered in Dynamics to real-world systems they design later in the engineering curriculum

3 When? What is the developmental history of your innovation? – I started bringing in physical models to supplement the regular textbook examples in 2011. In 2012, after the launch of iBooks Author, I started creating my own interactive Dynamics e-book. Dynamics: Supplement was launched in 2013 with version 2.0 in early 2015.

4 Where? Is this developed for a single class, a full course, or a curriculum? – This was developed for Dynamics but I have taken the idea of modeling and simulation into my Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics and Controls class. Have you tried this in other institutions? – No, although I am willing to send free evaluation copies of my e- book to those interested.

5 What? What has worked really well? – Students enjoy the real-world application of Dynamics topics over textbook problems. They also appreciate all the “aha” moments when our Dynamics model matches the real-world dynamics. What learning activities and materials have you developed? – I have developed over 20 physical models to demonstrate various topics of Dynamics. – Most of these examples are in my Dynamics: Supplement e-book for Apple products.

6 Prognosis? How are you documenting impact? – End-of-course evaluations How do you plan to scale-up? – Each semester I try and add at least 1 new physical model. What challenges are you currently facing? – What to do with homework assignments. Should I continue to assign textbook problems or have them model simple systems for homework? Can I create automatically graded homework problems that properly evaluate the students knowledge? What advice would you like from others at FOEE? – Creating semi-automatically graded homework assignments. – Any physical demonstrations that you like to use???
