Measuring Teachers’ Job Satisfaction at Secondary Level in Punjab Dr.Khuda Bakhsh Malik IER, Gomal University D.I.Khan

Abstract The present study investigated the level/extent of teachers’ job satisfaction in Punjab. A sample of 1400 Secondary School Teachers (SSTs) of Government secondary schools of Punjab participated in this study who rated their own job satisfaction. An instrument to measure their job satisfaction was developed by the researcher. The results indicated that the perceived job satisfaction of the SSTs is of poor (unsatisfactory) level in Punjab. The study ended by offering a number of practical and theoretical recommendations in this regard. Key words: secondary school teacher, job satisfaction, working conditions, Punjab

Statement of the problem The study is about to investigate how do the teachers perceive their job satisfaction? Methodology The target population of the study was all the SSTs of Government secondary schools (male) of the Punjab province. 1400 teachers of 350 secondary schools (randomly selected) participated in the study. The researcher developed and validated an instrument to measure teachers’ job satisfaction.

Data Collection & Analysis The researcher used e-mail, postal and courier services to send and collect the questionnaire from the teachers. The collected data was entered into SPSS and analyzed using descriptive statistics (Means & Standard Deviations).

Items Means Standard Deviations I am satisfied with my present position in Education department 2.980.97 I have job security 2.141.02 I enjoy the desired cooperation of teaching staff 2.661.09 I feel my salary is compatible with my needs and esteem 2.111.08 I am looking forward to a better job 3.111.13 I am satisfied with the working conditions 2.881.05 I feel a threat of my unwanted transfer 2.651.10 I feel that my work is being appreciated by the headmaster and society 2.481.14 There is no chances of promotion 2.051.21 Results How do the secondary school teachers perceive their job satisfaction? Overall Job Satisfaction 2.45 1.09

The table shows the ranking of all the nine items with means and standard deviations. The overall mean 2.45 with SD 1.09 shows poor level of teachers’ job satisfaction. It was also found that the job satisfaction is comparatively lower in ‘job security’, ‘pay package’ and ‘chances of promotion’

Conclusions and Recommendations Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that job satisfaction level of SSTs is significantly poor as they have no job security and chances of promotions. Besides this they are being offered very low pay package apparently. The following recommendations were made in this regard.

 The teachers should be provided job security as all of the recruitment of SSTs are being made on contract w.e.f. 1 st September 2000. The contract employee have no job structure and their contract means no pension, no gratuity, no leave, on net fixed pay only and the contract can be terminated at any time without any cause. So all the contractual teachers must be regularized by the Punjab government and next appointments should also be on regular basis.

 Their pay package should also be compatible with their needs and esteem so they can fulfill their basic needs at minimum standard. The net pay of SST BPS-16 hired on 1 st September 2000 was Rs.3803. Their next batch came in September 2002, their minimum required qualification was MA/M.Sc with B.Ed and they were offered net pay Rs.5500. That is totally against the human rights so the government should revise their pay package instantly according to their needs, scale and qualifications.

 The Secondary School Teachers see no chances of promotion as the teachers joined on 1 st September 2000 as SST are still working in the same scale and positions till writing of this report. It is so obvious that after completing half of their service, they have not been moved to next scale and position. So the government should consider them just human beings and Pakistani citizens for their promotions after thirteen years.

Thank you
