Warm Up Remember back … way back when you were a little kid …. when did you first learn or how did you learn that electricity and your body don’t mix??? Write down your story … we’ll listen to a few

Conductivity- Post Lab
3
Main Point of LAB!!!! Compounds conduct or fail to conduct electricity based on one basic property What type of bond connects the atoms within the compound
4
Know the three main types of chemical bonds Know which compounds conduct and don’t conduct electricity Make a mental connection between bonding and electrical conductivity Learn that electricity involves the movement of electrons through a substance and that movement depends on the type of bonds within the substance. Learning Objectives
5
Chemical bond: attractive force holding two or more atoms together. Involves two electrons. Covalent bond results from sharing electrons between the atoms. Usually found between nonmetals. Ionic bond results from the transfer (stealing) of electrons from a metal to a nonmetal. Metallic bond: attractive force holding pure metals together. Overview of Bonding
6
Ionic Conduction - Ionic compounds can conduct electricity when melted or dissolved in water - Ions separate from crystal structure which allows electrons to move easily
7
Molecular (Covalent) Conduction Molecular (Covalent) compounds do not conduct electricity They are often called insulators Let’s take a look at the conduction of a covalent compound
